One is the time of the \u201cawakening of nations\u201d, which was finalized in the nation-states on the edges of the three Eurasian Empires after WWI, or \u201cnational\u201d administrative units in the USSR. The second period, which started after 1989 (or 1991), also implies rethinking of the \u201cnational\u201d and new nationbuilding in the post-communist space.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nNational and gender identities are inseparable and interrelated, and the practices used to \u201cnaturalize\u201d gender differences and hierarchies in nationalist and statehood projects are of special interest. Gender and nation as social constructions largely result from \u00aboppositions\u00bb or \u00abdelineations\u00bb; they become especially highlighted at the lines of \u201cpassage\u201d or crossing the boundaries\/borders. The notion of \u00abborderlands,\u201d borders, and boundaries, both geographical and social, is a key one for the conference.<br \/>\nConference organizers are hoping for an interdisciplinary academic debate of the interception of gender, empire, nationbuilding, and borders within the following topical areas:<br \/>\nEtching the edges of Europe: borderlands as gendered space;<br \/>\nEmpire and gender order;<br \/>\nnation, citizenship, masculinity and femininity;<br \/>\n\u201cnational motherhood\u201d and patriotic masculinity;<br \/>\ngendered iconography of the national idea;<br \/>\nwomen\u2019s bodies and nation\u2019s boundaries;<br \/>\ngendered spaces of national politics;<br \/>\nnationalism, sexuality, militarism;<br \/>\nintellectual women in national movements;<br \/>\ngendering national memories;<br \/>\nnational church\u00bb and gender order;<br \/>\nempire, nation, reproduction, and welfare;<br \/>\n\u00abas a woman, I have no nation\u00bb: feminism vs. nationalism;<br \/>\nnationalism and post-Soviet masculinity;<br \/>\nmigration, mixed marriages, trafficking.<br \/>\nConference languages are the regional lingua franca of Russian and English.<br \/>\nProposals for individual papers or complete panels can be sent to<br \/>\ngender@ehu-international.org<br \/>\nPlease include your contact information, brief CV and paper description of up to 250 words.
