Brief reading and discussion from Carnevele’s and Guglielmo’s recent books documenting Italian immigrant experiences with labor, race, gender, language, and working-class radicalism in the early twentieth century.<\/p>\n

Nancy Carnevale<\/strong> specializes in the history of immigration, race and ethnicity in the U.S. Her most recent book, „A New Language, A New World: Italian Immigrants in the United States, 1890-1945″<\/strong> (University of Illinois Press, 2009, information<\/a>), won the American Book Award, and explores the experience of language for Italian immigrants and their children. She is currently working on a comparative study of Italian American and African American relations in urban and suburban New Jersey. She is an Associate Professor of History at Montclair State University.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Guglielmo<\/strong> specializes in the history of immigration, race, women, and labor in the United States, and is an Associate Professor of History at Smith College. Her recent book „Living the Revolution: Italian Women’s Resistance and Radicalism in New York City, 1880-1945“<\/strong> (UNC Press, 2010, information<\/a>) received the OAH Lerner-Scott Prize and was selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Book. It documents Italian immigrant women’s commitment to revolutionary and transnational social movements, and explores how this activism diminished as they became white working-class Americans. She is currently translating and compiling Italian immigrant women’s anarchist-feminist writing from the early twentieth century for her next publication, My Rebelious Heart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
