During this period, these regions underwent diverse and profound political transformations, ranging from the consolidation of socialist systems and the establishment of military dictatorships to transitions toward democratic societies. These changes gave rise to different forms of expertise and institutions that were shaped by dialogues between medicine, the Church, the state, and society.
Southern and Eastern European have traditionally been considered separately, but inhabit a similar position as European “semi-peripheries”, where, according to dominant narratives, backwardness or isolation from major scientific developments often prevailed due to the history of their political regimes. For that reason, and despite having dynamic and expanding historiographies that are bringing new perspectives on sexuality and health, Southern and Eastern Europe continue to occupy a marginal place in narratives about historical changes in sexual health conceptualization and practices. The workshop aims to challenge Western-centric perspectives and situate both regions within a transnational and comparative framework to shed light on the connections, contrasts, and circulations of knowledge between different political, religious, and scientific traditions.
We aim to understand how each society negotiated the tensions between scientific authority, moral prescriptions, and lived experiences and how these negotiations translated into public health policies that ruled intimate life. We will adopt a comparative perspective that examines Eastern and Southern Europe not against the benchmark of Western countries as the supposed “normal” model, but in relation to each other, with the aim of identifying common patterns and differences that can ultimately be situated within a broader European history of sexuality.
We invite contributions that examine how these regimes of expertise were formed, who, and how they shaped definitions of sexual health, the body, and intimate life in Southern and Eastern Europe. We welcome analyses of how different political ideologies —such as national Catholicism, socialism, feminism and liberalism— shaped transformations in regimes of sexual expertise. We are interested in the languages used to legitimize these forms of authority, the institutions that sustained them, and the dynamics of reception, negotiation, and resistance that they generated.

Paper submissions could address, but are not limited to, themes such as:
– Regimes of authority and expert languages.
