Weiterlesen (Web)

CfP: Dance and Gender, Politics of the Performing Body (Event: „Big Berks“ 05/2014); DL: –

Berkshire Conference on Women’s History, Toronto, Canada, May 22-25, 2014, Website

Call for panelists from Ilyana Karthas: I am seeking a third panelist (preferably an historian) to join a panel for the 2014 Berkshire Conference on the topic of dance, modernity, and gender (or, more even generally, the politics of the performing body). Our panel seeks to demonstrate the richness of dance as a historical subject of analysis and exemplifies “histories on the edge” as our work bridges the gap between dance studies and historical research. So far, we have a panelist who works on the revival of professionalism in ballet and the another panelist who works on Nureyev and how he helped to alter ideologies of masculinity in the 1960s. CfP: Feminism and Reproduction (Event: „Big Berks“ 05/2014); DL: –

Berkshire Conference on Women’s History, Toronto, Canada, May 22-25, 2014, Website

Call for panelists from Sarah Rowley: I am interested in putting together a panel for the 2014 Big Berks (Toronto, May 22-25, 2014). I am looking for two papers that in some way fit with my own, which considers pro-life feminism in the 1970s-1980s United States. The focus panel could go in a number of ways, focusing on outside-the-mainstream second-wave feminists, abortion politics, on-the-ground organizational histories of women’s collective organizing, the issue of reproduction within feminism in different places and/or eras, or different ways to approach the increasing historiography on the era of the rise of the New Right. There is certainly room for a transnational analysis as well. I am very open to Continue reading

CfP: Theater and Women’s Health Activism (Event: „Big Berks“ 05/2014); DL: –

Berkshire Conference on Women’s History, Toronto, Canada, May 22-25, 2014, Website

Call for panelists from Tamar W. Carroll: I am seeking a third panelist for a panel for the 2014 Berkshire Conference on the topic of theater and women’s health activism. We hope to explore both formal and street theater projects aimed at transforming understandings of gender and health.

One paper analyzes Eve Ensler’s „The Vagina Monologues“ as a transnational activist/theatrical initiative for combating gender violence related to health and body politics, including eating disorders, biomedical abuse, and mutilation. The second paper examines the Church Ladies for Choice, a group of gay men AIDS activists who perform in drag in support of abortion rights and women’s access to reproductive health care. CfP: Gender and Sexuality in the Construction of Knowledge (Event, Denver, 10/2013); DL: 11.01.2013

German Studies Assoc., Denver USA, Thirty-Seventh Annual Conference (Web)

Venue: Denver Marriott Tech Center in Denver, Colorado

Those of us organizing the session will provide perspectives from the histories of German economics, historiography, and philosophy in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Continue reading

CfP: Material Culture and Festive Practices of Subaltern Women (Event: „Big Berks“ 05/2014); DL: –

Berkshire Conference on Women’s History, Toronto, Canada, May 22-25, 2014, Website

Call for panelists from Margriet Fokken: I would like to propose a panel for the Berkshire Conference on Women’s History on material culture and festive practices of subaltern women. This could be expanded to religious or everyday practices. Within such a panel we could explore the possibilities and impossibilities of engaging with the subaltern perspectives through material culture. The theme of the Berkshire Conference is ‘History on the Edge’. In this panel we could engage with different ‘edges’, both critically, methodologically and spatially. Therefore it would be good to have panelists who work on or are from different locales.

My own research focusses on Hindustani men and women in (the Dutch colony of) Suriname between 1873 and Continue reading

CfP: Destabilizing Boundaries of Knowledge: Incorporating Science into Women’s and Gender History” (Event: „Big Berks“ 05/2014); DL: –

Berkshire Conference on Women’s History, Toronto, Canada, May 22-25, 2014, Website

Call for panelists from Kimberly A. Hamlin : We invite 2-3 additional panelists to participate in a 2014 Berks roundtable on how and why we, as historians of women and gender, should and do incorporate science into our teaching and scholarship. We particularly invite scholars who work on topics outside of North America and Western Europe and those who research periods before the 19th century. While many historians of science have been incorporating insights from women’s and gender history into their research and teaching for years (as evidenced by the growing number of panels on women/gender at the Continue reading
