Although it is almost seventy years since the end of the Second World War, more and more remarkable women’s life stories are being divulged to the public by means of autobiographies and biographies and scholarly publications on this topic. The Sixth International Conference on Women and the Holocaust will focus on *personal women’s life stories* from gendered perspectives. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss various understandings of shame and it’s appearance in different contexts, as conceptualized within a broad range of fields. These could include history, theology, gender studies, natural sciences, psychology, cultural studies, politology, media studies, health studies, amongst others. The ambition is to provide a platform for the different perspectives to inform each other, and thereby to deepen the scope of each individual research endeavour as well as of the shared body of knowledge.

The workshop will investigate how science and/or scholarship (in the broadest sense) from late 19th to the first half of the 20th century contributed to the historical production of work.

Work has fundamentally changed since the late 19th century. Emerging welfare states not only started to intervene more systematically in labour relations but also to bring forward new social facts. Overall, work was increasingly normalized as regular – at best skillful – gainful employment. It took place in national (instead of just occupational) labour markets and was complemented by new kinds of legitimate non-work (unemployment, illness, childhood, leisure time etc).
