The military has never been an male-exclusive world (soldiers’ wives, canteen women, nurses, etc.), but the fact that women could bear arms and fight, in the army or other power structures, still remains controversial, calling into question gender roles and social evolution as a whole. In 2006, the Journal of Power Institutions in Post-Soviet Societies (PIPSS.ORG) dedicated one of its issue to the question of Women and/in the Military in Tsarist, Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia (Web). In this new PIPSS issue, we want to change the focus and tackle the question of women fighters, whether inside the army or in more or less formalized armed group.

We invite article proposals for a global and comparative approach to the history of the welfare state that seeks to overcome the epistemological Eurocentrism that many scholars have employed, whether consciously or unconsciously. Thus, this volume aims to investigate whether or not the welfare state was/is a global or a regional phenomenon. Moreover, alongside the study of national cases, this volume questions the possibility of a transnational or supranational understanding of the mechanisms that characterized the origins of the welfare state during the 20th century.

We face the hegemony of neoliberal ideologies and their consequences in terms of attacks on public programs in areas such as health, education, income-transfers, housing and so on. We aim to consciously contrast the normalization and dominance of “liberal thought” which consistently downplays the role of welfare legislation and institutions. Long pursued in parallel fashion, studies of the ages of life and of gender have increasingly converged in recent years, nonetheless leaving large areas to be discovered. This issue of the journal Enfances Familles Générations therefore proposes to contribute to this convergence. It will focus on constructions of age by sex and trajectories structured by gender. This will lead naturally to take account of the passage of time and historical time, female and male lifecycles, (inter)generational experiences or gendered social temporalities (work, family, leisure, etc.).

If some researchers have already opened a path, there remains a long way to go so that age and gender are treated as two systems of social relations simultaneously distinct and intertwined. The body plays a prominent role in a number of recent contributions to urban studies and urban history. During the last twenty-five years, scholars have written about a variety of issues that put the human body at the center of their analysis, such as the sensual experience in cities or urban forms of biopolitics. Richard Sennett’s book Flesh and Stone, for instance, plays a prominent role in this research context, as it addresses the relationship between urban history and a history of the body. While such works provide an important point of departure for thinking about a history of urban bodies, this special issue seeks to offer a fresh approach to historical research on the city and the body: It will focus on the social formation of the body’s materiality in cities, thus exploring new ways of thinking about the relationship between urban history and the history of the body.
