Im Rahmen der Erarbeitung eines Forschungsüberblicks zum Themenbereich „Bibliotheken und Büchersammlungen von Fürstinnen in der Frühen Neuzeit“ (1550-1750) möchten wir Kolleginnen und Kollegen, vorzugsweise in den Fächern Geschichte, Literaturwissenschaft und Kunstgeschichte, bitten, laufende oder geplante Forschungsprojekte, die diesen buch- und bibliotheksgeschichtlichen Bereich betreffen, zu melden. In Debatten um ‚Parallelgesellschaften‘, Integrationspolitiken und die ‚Demokratietauglichkeit‘ von ImmigrantInnen aktualisieren sich nicht nur Ängste vor ‚Überfremdung‘. Die Beschreibungen des ‚Fremden‘ dienen auch einer Absicherung und Neukonstruktion des (unausgesprochenen) ‚Eigenen‘. Das legt theoretisch eine Bezugnahme auf den Begriff ‚Orientalismus‘ (Edward Said) nahe, der Konzepte eines orientalischen ‚Anderen‘ als Konstruktionen kolonialer Überlegenheit analysiert hat. Transformations, Eighth conference in the Socialism and Sexuality Series
Organized by the Institute of History of Jagiellonian University in Krakow, with financial support from the Polish Historical Society Krakow, 26-28 September 2007
Starting with the French Revolution of 1789 and through the revolutions of 1830, 1848, 1917 and the revolutionary movements of 1870 and 1968 to the fall of the Iron Curtain, political revolutions effect not only political changes but also deep transformations of social systems, sometimes intentional but often unprompted and leading among other things to modifications of laws and regulations. Usually the revolutionary rebuilding of customs and mentalities becomes the hallmark of the general transformation and the creation of a „better future“, „Utopian World“ and „New Man“.

The Center for Urban History of East-Central Europe (Lviv, Ukraine) is pleased to announce a competition for grants towards the research that fits the topic „Modern East-Central European City in the 19th and 20th Centuries: Commonalities of Urbanity, Regional Variations and Vectors of Change“.
Thematically project participants research will have to touch upon at least some of the following:
1) peculiarities of the 19th and 20th century urbanization process in East-Central Europe (demography, infrastructure, class formation);
2) formation and contestation of urban space, its structure and usage;
3) urban policies ? techniques of governmentality, public space,citizenship, municipal community, and civic action;
4) representations of the city and in the city, meanings, symbols,imagination and fantasies displayed, performed and rethought.

Zwischen moralischer Instanz und Ökonomie der Aufmerksamkeit: Gedächtnis und Öffentlichkeit.
Podiumsgespräch im Rahmen der Vorlesung „Nationalsozialismus und Gedächtniskultur: Österreich im europäischen Kontext“
Mit der Waldheim-Debatte 1986 ist die Frage des Umgangs mit der NS- Vergangenheit in Österreich auf die Bühne des öffentlichen Diskurses getreten. Mehr als 20 Jahre danach hat sich Gedächtnis nicht allein als Fixpunkt auf der medialen Agenda etabliert, vielmehr: die Initiativen im Feld der Erinnerungspolitik und Gedächtniskultur folgen zunehmend den Logiken des Medialen, d.h. vor allem auch der Konkurrenz um die knappe Ressource Aufmerksamkeit. Steht damit die Funktion von Gedächtnis als moralischer Instanz, als Instrument politischer Aufklärung zur Disposition? Continue reading →

Gefühle können in gewissen Grenzen gezielt verändert und auch manipuliert werden; zudem unterliegen sie einem kulturellen Wandel, der sich unabhängig von den Absichten sozialer Akteure vollzieht. Gefühle werden inszeniert und gestaltet, aber trotzdem nicht frei gewählt.

Feministische Perspektiven auf Migrationspolitik in Deutschland (Arbeitstitel)

Seit den 1960er Jahren hat sich die Bundesrepublik Deutschland teils unbemerkt, teils politisch ungewollt, zu einem Einwanderungsland entwickelt. Während Einwanderungs- und Integrationsprozesse in diesen Jahren allenfalls punktuell Gegenstand politischer Debatten waren, setzte mit der allmählichen Europäisierung von Migrationspolitiken und der Diskussion um eine Zuwanderungsgesetzgebung seit Anfang des Jahrtausends eine breite öffentliche Thematisierung von Einwanderung und Integration ein. In dieser Debatte bleibt jedoch die strukturelle Vergeschlechtlichung von Migrations- und Integrationsfragen weiterhin unterbelichtet.

Proposals for papers, panels and round-tables are invited for the 2007 MAPACA conference in Philadelphia, PA. The conference offers a wide range of research areas in Popular Culture and American Culture. These areas and their corresponding chairs are listed below. Please send a one-page proposal to the appropriate chair before June 15, 2007. Include a brief CV or bio and any A/V needs. Single papers, three or four person panels, round-tables and alternative formats are encouraged. You may submit proposals to more than one area, but you may present only ONE paper at the conference.
