Die internationale Tagung befasst sich mit der Eigenlogik der konkreten Medien, die in der Wissensvermittlung der Humanwissenschaften seit ihrer Entstehung im 19. Jahrhundert zum Einsatz kommen: Neben der Geschichte des Buches und der Printmedien gilt es an Beispielen aus verschiedenen Disziplinen (Philologie, Psychologie, Psychoanalyse) die Rolle von visuellen Technologien (Photographie, Film) und von wissenschaftlichen Ausstellungen vergleichend zu analysieren.
Die Tagung findet im Gedenken an Lydia Marinelli (1965-2008) statt, die eine der originellsten HistorikerInnen und KuratorInnen ihrer Generation war. Von ihrer Arbeit werden sicher in erster Linie ihre Ausstellungen im Gedächtnis bleiben sowie ihre innovativen und anregenden Versuche, der Geschichtsschreibung der Psychoanalyse neue Impulse zu geben. Darüber hinaus haben ihre Arbeiten aber auch Implikationen für die grundsätzlichere Frage, auf welche Weise Wissen in den Humanwissenschaften erzeugt und weitergegeben wird. The Centre for Gender Research at Uppsala University is investigating ‘Nature/Culture and Transgressive Encounters’ and invites writings for an anthology on gender/feminist studies and material sciences (such as chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering, nanoscience, physics, and related fields). Material sciences are entangled with gender, culture, and society. Therefore, we are interested in analyses done at the intersection of gender studies, feminist science studies, and material sciences that pay attention to the substance and materiality of material sciences from a gender perspective. To promote an international discussion on these topics, the scripts must be written in English, but we encourage authors for whom English is not their first language to contribute to the anthology; we will support proofreading your paper.

Anthology on Disability and Passing

Although one of the common experiences of passing involves disability, scholars have devoted little attention to this important topic. Studies of passing have also paid insufficient attention to the interplay that occurs between disability, race, gender, sexuality, and class when people transgress and create identity boundaries. Blurring the Lines: Disability, Race, Gender and Passing in Modern America is an effort to correct these intellectual omissions and advance the study of this important topic. The editors of this forthcoming anthology seek proposals for scholarly articles on disability and passing. We especially seek proposals that analyze aspects of identity such as race, class, gender, and sexuality, in addition to disability.
The editors welcome submissions from all fields in the humanities and social sciences for this interdisciplinary collection. We expect the anthology to reflect the work being done in fields ranging from literary theory to history to sociology. The anthology will focus mainly on modern America, but we also welcome articles that offer a comparative perspective from a different time or place. The editors are not looking for personal narratives, but will consider personal accounts set within a strong analytic framework. We hope to limit the number of articles with a biographical or autobiographical approach.

CfP: Special issue Thirdspace: Audacity of Hope? DL: 15.09.09

The editors of ‚thirdspace: a journal of feminist theory and culture‘ invite submissions for our forthcoming issue, „Audacity of Hope?“ We are seeking submissions that critically engage with the notion of hope as it was used by a diverse assortment of constituents in the 2008 American presidential election. As a key theme in Barack Obama’s campaign (and his book ‚Audacity of Hope‘), the term evokes the possibility of transformational change. How does this version/vision of hope frame debates about gender and equity issues, struggles for equality and the recognition of difference? To what extent has the ‚hope‘ agenda impacted on politics, policy and popular media during Obama’s presidency to date? This issue invites contributions that consider:

  • Obama’s first months as president and the hope and/or reality of social change; the catchphrase ‚yes we can‘ and its appropriation, as well as what it might mean in terms of gender, race, sexuality and other parameters of difference; that controversial Ms. cover and discussions of Obama as a ‚feminist savior‘.
  • the global currency of Obama’s hope rhetoric (i.e. Cairo speech); hope for policy and social change around issues such as abortion (the possibility or desirability of a „Common Ground“ approach, the global gag rule), health care, economic equality; the hope of LGBTQ people in the Obama campaign and subsequent disillusionment (i.e. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the brief defending DOMA);

Auf Initiative von Franz X. Eder und Philipp Sarasin ist für 11. und 12. Juni 2010 eine DoktorandInnen-Tagung zur Wissens- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte in Wien geplant. Die Veranstaltung ist ein Kooperationsprojekt zwischen dem Graduiertenkolleg des Zentrums „Geschichte des Wissens“ (ZGW), einem wissenschaftlichen Kompetenzzentrum der Universität Zürich und der ETH Zürich, sowie dem Institut für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte, dem Institut für Geschichte und dem Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien.
Ziel und Zweck der Tagung sind Präsentation, Kommentierung und Diskussion von laufenden Dissertationsprojekten aus den Bereichen Wissens- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Die Bedeutung von Netzwerken ist in der Migrationsforschung seit langem betont und in vielen Kontexten empirisch belegt worden. Verwandtschaft und gemeinsame lokale Herkunft bilden in der Regel die wichtigsten Grundlagen für soziale Beziehungen, denen bei Wanderungsbewegungen oft eine wichtige Rolle zukommt: Informationen, aber auch konkrete Hilfe und Unterstützung konnten über weit gespannter Netzwerke aktiviert werden und wichtige Hilfestellungen bieten. Allerdings hat sich die historische Forschung vielfach damit begnügt, die Netzwerke vor allem zu beschreiben und dabei explizit oder implizit ihren Nutzen zu unterstellen.

Die geplante Tagung möchte dagegen offener danach fragen, inwiefern und in welchen konkreten Situationen Beziehungsnetzwerke nützlich und inwiefern sie eher belastend sein können. The Eleventh Biennial Lessons and Legacies Conference, sponsored by the Holocaust Educational Foundation and Florida Atlantic University, will consist of two plenary addresses, up to three roundtables, up to eighteen panels, and up to fourteen workshops relating to recent issues and advances in scholarship on all aspects of Holocaust Studies, and pointing the way toward further research.

Interested scholars are invited to present proposals for individual papers or entire panels. Panels normally will consist of three papers and a commentator or four papers and no commentator, although other formats are possible. Proposals should include a title and brief description of the panel as a whole, along with the names, institutional affiliations, contact information, paper titles and abstracts of all panelists. The Consortium on the Revolutionary Era, 1750-1850 (CRE) is a venue for the presentation of original reserach on not only the revolutionary history of Europe, but also the Atlantic World and beyond. We welcome proposals from allied disciplines and comparative studies; in short, the conference offers a platform for research into the revolutionary era broadly defined.

The 2010 conference will be held February 25-27 at the College of Charleston and the Francis Marion Hotel, located in the center of Charleston’s historic district. The conference venues are within easy walking distance of Charleston’s eighteenth- and nineteenth-century urban core, its museums, waterfront, and many exceptional restaurants.

Die Tagung widmet sich den Mädchen im Altertum, von der Steinzeit bis in die Spätantike, innerhalb eines geographischen Rahmens, der von Europa bis nach Ägypten und dem Alten Orient reicht.

Folgende Themenkomplexe sind dabei von Interesse:

Definition. »Mädchen« sind weibliche Kinder und Jugendliche, die noch nicht den Status einer Erwachsenen erlangt haben. Dieser Status wird in unserer Gesellschaft aus juristischer Sicht mit Vollendung des 18. Lebensjahres erreicht, aus soziologischer Sicht etwa mit der ökonomischen Unabhängigkeit (dem eigenen Job) oder der biologischen Reproduktion (eigenen Kindern). Wie sahen dagegen die kulturspezifischen rites de passage zum Erwachsenenstatus für weibliche Menschen im Altertum aus? War das prinzipiell die Hochzeit? Dies legen zwar die literarischen Quellen aus Griechenland und Rom nahe; für prähistorische Gesellschaften hingegen lässt sich die Existenz einer Institution wie der Ehe nur postulieren, nicht beweisen. Network approaches and methods of analyzing networks become more and more popular in the social sciences. Network analysis, as for example the social network analysis (SNA), does not focus on actors solely, but on the relations between them.
