Understanding the interaction between male and female forms of agency is necessary to the study of power, both in its modern and premodern articulations. Using gender as a category of analysis in the examination of Macht und Herrschaft opens up a range of possible investigations.
What is the relevance of gender identity and what are its possible effects on legitimacy or the exercise of power? How do gendered identities interact within the framework of a royal family? Are there characteristics specifically expected from a male or female ruler and, if so, to what extent are they gender typical? Which conflicts can arise when such expectations are not met, as in the case of a childless ruler? How do evaluations of a powerful individual’s physicality and sexuality reflect political or social conceptions of order? The aim of this international conference is to gather scholars of premodern societies in Asia, Europe and North Africa in order to approach these questions from an interdisciplinary, transcultural perspective.
