The work of French filmmaker Catherine Breillat spans a period of three decades, though it is only in recent years, following the succès de scandale that was Romance (1999), that she has come to wider public and academic attention. Since then, Breillat’s work has continued to attract attention, though detailed academic or theoretical exploration of her work has, for the most part, been somewhat lacking and remains dominated by Romance. It is with this in mind that we invite contributions to a conference examining Breillat’s cinematic output from the 1970s to the present day. We would welcome explorations of the thematic or theoretical issues her work provokes. These could include, but are not confined to, the following areas or questions:
Breillat’s approach to sex/sexuality/female desire The portrayal and function of violence in Breillat’s films Adaptation and the relation of film to text. The questions of authorship in Breillat’s work Feminist approaches to Breillat’s work. Censorship and/or extreme cinema Constructions of the female/feminine Philosophical/theoretical/ethical approaches to Breillat’s work Adolescent sexuality Relations between the sexes/sexual politics.

Please email proposals of approximately 200 words to the conference organisers by Monday 19 November 2007.
