The Center for the Historical Study of Women and Gender at the State University of New York at Binghamton in association with Alexander Street Press will award an annual prize of $500 for the best scholarly use of the primary source materials archived on the Women and Social Movements website. For the 2008 prize we invite work that draws on one of the following three sets of sources:
(1) Proceedings of Women’s Rights Conventions, 1848-1869; (2) Published sources related to the woman suffrage movement, 1830-1930, including the six-volume History of Woman Suffrage, 1848-1922; (3) Minutes of the annual national conventions of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, 1874-1898.
The Women and Social Movements in the U.S. website seeks to broaden its coverage on women and religion in American history by publishing document projects and documents focusing on “Catholic Women and Social Movements.” Carol K. Coburn of Avila University, co-author of Spirited Lives: How Nuns Shaped Catholic Culture and American Life, 1836-1920 (1999), will serve as the editor of the initiative and will begin accepting proposals for document projects on this topic.The website currently offers a variety of projects concerning Protestant women, Native American women, African-American women, Jewish women, and most recently Catholic Women and Second Wave Feminism. To expand this important topic, we encourage proposals on Catholic laywomen or women religious from any time period in U.S. history.

Course description:
The course will highlight the importance for feminist studies of engaging with science and technology studies and emphasize how feminist theories can provide new questions and offer new perspectives for analysis. Focussing on theories and methodologies, the lecturers will discuss how to do research on science and technology. The course will be based on theories from the field of science studies where feminist research has provided vital contributions. This includes studies of the production of science, scientific cultures and communities, and of communication, dissemination and public understanding of science.
