Conference: Empires and their contested Pasts, 18.05. -20.05.07, Belfast

Date: 18.05.2007 – 20.05.2007
Where: Belfast, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
The 28th Irish Conference of Historians examinines contestations of gender, race, class etc.
There is no restriction on chronology, location, or type of empire. Comparative studies and papers examining historiographical debates and/or contestations of race, religion, gender, class, and culture will be presented. We particularly invited proposals from postgraduate students.

The conference is preceded by the 2007 Wiles Lectures on 15–18 May, when Professor Christopher Bayly will speak on ‘Empire and liberalism: India and beyond’. Our aim is to build upon the Wiles themes and to explore the complexities, controversies, and contradictions of empires and history more broadly.
Confirmed participants include Christopher Bayly, Richard Drayton, Bill Nasson, Nicholas Canny, Jane Ohlmeyer, and Simon Potter.
The conference programme will be drawn up by the end of January 2007.
