Continue reading

CfP: „The Radical Right in post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe – the Role of Legacies“, Deadline: 01.12.07

Conference at New York University, April 24 – 26, 2008
Perhaps more than in other regions, the radical right in post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe is interpreted as the „return of history“ or the „return to the past“. Moreover, the histories of state socialism and of pre-socialist non-democratic experiences are seen as major factors in
shaping both the contents and the opportunities of the radical right in these new or emerging democracies. Often, the role of „legacies“ in the sense of Jowitt, Crawford, Lijphart and others are used to interpret the particularities of the phenomenon. Continue reading

CfP: Catherine Breillat: Women, Sex, Violence, Cinema (Conference, London). Deadline: 19.11.2007

Saturday, 12th April, 2008
Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, London
Website

The work of French filmmaker Catherine Breillat spans a period of three decades, though it is only in recent years, following the succès de scandale that was Romance (1999), that she has come to wider public and academic attention. Since then, Breillat’s work has continued to attract attention, though detailed academic or theoretical exploration of her work has, for the most part, been somewhat lacking and remains dominated by Romance. It is with this in mind that we invite contributions to a conference examining Breillat’s cinematic output from the 1970s to the present day. We would welcome explorations of the thematic or theoretical issues her work provokes. These could include, but are not confined to, the following areas or questions: Continue reading

CfP: ‘Aftermaths of War: Women’s Movements and Female Activists, 1918-1923’, Deadline: 15.01.2008

10 to 12 September 2008
Hinsley Hall, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England
Deadline: 15 January 2008

Organisers: Ms Ingrid Sharp, Department of German, University of Leeds i.e.sharp[at]leeds.ac.uk and Dr Matthew Stibbe, Department of History, Sheffield Hallam University m.stibbe[at]shu.ac.uk

Following on from the publication in April 2007 of the volume A. S. Fell and I. E. Sharp (eds.) The Women’s Movement in Wartime: International Perspectives, 1914-19, Palgrave Macmillan, which deals with the responses of the international women’s movement to the First World War, the focus of this conference will be on the response, experience and representation of the organised women’s movement and individual activists to the aftermath of the war in the years 1918 and 1923. The approach is broadly historical, but we would welcome proposals from a range of different disciplines, such as Cultural and Gender/Women’s Studies, English, Sociology, Modern Languages and of course History. By bringing together scholars working on organised women and individual activists in national and transnational contexts, we hope to make a distinctive and worthwhile contribution to this area of studies. Questions considered could include: Continue reading

Workshop: Politik – Macht – Geschlecht, 16.11.2007, Wien

Continue reading
