Nield: Merriam-Webster in part defines the noun „excess“ in the following manner: „the state or an instance of surpassing usual, proper, or specified limits“ and „undue or immoderate indulgence: intemperance.“ Perhaps even more evocative is the list of synonyms which the site provides for „excess“: „bellyful, fat, overabundance, overage, overmuch, overplus, oversupply, plethora, plus, redundancy, superabundance, superfluity, surfeit, surplus, surplusage.“ This string of synonyms, itself „overmuch,“ confirms the definition’s dialectics of flesh and spirituality, mundane and sacred, emotion and rationality, empirical and transcendental, hyle and morphe, all dualities which map themselves over a more basic, corporeally grounded tension between conceptions of femininity and masculinity. Call for panelists from Christina Gessler: Seeking two to three additional scholars whose work considers widows not as defying their culture, but the tight definition of it historians would have us believe either inevitable or proper. Work outside the U.S. preferred.

The roundtable format allows us to discuss with each other (and the audience) our approach to seeing these (and all) women as independent historical actors, the results of our research, and our ongoing questions or methodological concerns.

„Changing feminist paradigms“ refers to a shift from a Turkish-oriented historiography of women’s experiences to an emphasis on diversity in both the late Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East. Scholarship has come a long way in producing “women’s histories,” but feminist critiques of national historiography and challenges to the conventional periodization of Ottoman-Turkish historical narrative are tasks yet to be undertaken.
