Der Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs und das vermeintliche Ende der Blockkonfrontation zwischen Ost und West weckten viele Hoffnungen auf eine friedlichere Welt. Als der Politologe Francis Fukuyama kurz nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion vom Ende der Geschichte sprach, konnte man nicht voraussehen, was in den folgenden Dekaden auf die Welt zukommen würde. Eine rasante Verflechtung von Ökonomien und Gesellschaften, der Aufstieg von industriellen Schwellenländern und der Beginn einer Verschiebung der ökonomischen und politischen Machtzentren haben begonnen, die Welt nachhaltig zu verändern. Friedlicher ist sie nicht geworden. Im Gegenteil. Das Heidelberger Institut für Internationale Konfliktforschung zählte 2013 weltweit 414 Konflikte, von denen 45 als hochgewaltsam einzustufen waren. “Love Studies” marks a significant interdisciplinary interest over the last two decades in rethinking the concept of “love” as a distinct and important area of study. Thinkers across many disciplines are studying love as “love” rather than in terms of connected concepts such as “care” or “sexual desire,” and claiming love as an important ethical, social, and/or political force. But how much are these studies being led by male and non-feminist scholars? Love in Western thought is often associated with women/the feminine, but has this rhetorical ploy made it more difficult for female and feminist thinkers to theorize love? Love is in the air, particularly for feminists. In the hope of expanding the scope of critical love studies to include also the humanities, Exploring Affect invite scholars, students, artists and activists to participate in an interdisciplinary symposium on love.

Invited speakers are Brita Planck (Göteborg) who will present her dissertation Kärlekens språk (The language of love) about love in the Swedish nobility 1750-1900, Lena Gunnarsson (Örebro), who will discuss her research in feminist love studies, and Tove Pettersen (Oslo), who will talk about the notion of love in the thought of Simone de Beauvoir.
