CfP: History of Technology and Science Days/Teknik- och vetenskaphistoriska dagar 2013 (Event: 03/2013, Umeå); DL: 14.01.2013

Swedish National Committee for History of Technology and Science (SNTV), Conference webpage

Venue: Umeå University, Sweden
Time: 20–22 March 2013
Deadline: 14 January 2013

The conference welcomes researchers, including PhD students, from within the field of history of science and technology and all related fields in the humanities and social sciences, as well as researchers and participants from museums and the culture heritage sector.

The conference is open to presentations or sessions on any theme, topic, or period related to the history of science and technology, but we especially welcome proposals that explicitly engage and intersect with the following three emerging interdisciplinary approaches:

  • Digital Humanities
  • Environmental Humanities
  • Medical Humanities

These rapidly expanding research areas encompass a multitude of visions, methodological directions, theoretical perspectives, and objects of study, but all represent efforts to reformulate and revitalize the relationship between the humanities and society within their topical areas. We are interested in exploring the ways in which the history of science and technology is, and can be, represented in these emerging fields. What are the main contributions and challenges for historians of science and technology working within the digital, environmental, or medical humanities? How do such engagements support, challenge, or reshape classic narratives and approaches in the history of science and technology? Do they enable new areas of research?

Proposals for sessions (3–4 papers), individual papers, posters and round table discussions (of no more than 250 words) in English or Swedish/Scandinavian should be sent to the conference administration: tvhd2013@idesam.umu.se. Deadline for submitting abstracts is 14 January 2013. Registration will be open during February 2013, see our webpage. The conference fee is SEK 500 for PhD students and SEK 800 for other participants.

“The History of Technology and Science Days 2013” is organised by The Swedish National Committee for History of Technology and Science (SNTV) together with the research group Umeå Studies in Science, Technology and Environment (USSTE), and the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Umeå University.
