Seen from a historical perspective it is a relatively recent – and fragile – achievement of modern societies that violence against and abuse of children meets with wide-spread social disapproval and legal consequences. Despite an increase in knowledge about the extent of and reasons for abuse of children the estimated number of undetected cases is alarming even today.
