Universidad de los Andes (Web), the Journal of Women’s History (Web), and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá (Web)

Time: 18-21 April 2017
Venue: Bogota, Colombia
Proposals by: 17 October 2016

The Program Committee welcomes panel proposals and individual papers from faculty and graduate students that reflect the richness and diversity of recent scholarship in Latin American women’s history. We interpret the conference theme broadly, inviting submissions that explore the various ways that Latin American women made themselves visible in politics, culture, and society. Proposals might consider, for example, women’s participation in public forums, whether through literary production (newspapers, periodicals, and novels), creative practices, popular cultural expression, or social protest. „Public life“ includes but is not limited to women’s roles in politics, consumption, fashion, sports, labor, and education. It also encompasses women’s use of public space: cities, theatres, museums, and other human habitats.

Announced keynote speakers: Lucrecia Infante Vargas (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico) and Joan Wallach Scott (Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton University). The Program Committee will accept a limited number of proposals that examine the influence of Joan Scott’s work on Latin American women’s and gender history.

The official language of the conference is Spanish. We will consider proposals submitted in English and Portuguese, but we encourage participants to present their papers in Spanish (or a combination of Spanish and Portuguese) at the conference whenever possible.

The deadline for the submission of proposals is 17 October 2016. Please include a 200-word abstract for each paper and, in the case of complete panels, a 200-word description of the panel’s themes. Each participant also should submit a one-page vita. A limited number of partial subventions for travel may be available for scholars based in Latin American countries.

Proposals may be submitted electronically in Spanish, Portuguese, or English at jwh.uniandes.edu.co. Please direct any questions to the conference organizer, Dr. Sandra Beatriz Sánchez López at jwh.colombia2017@uniandes.edu.co.
