CfP: Antiracist Methodologies in University Work, 26.10.07, Stockholm

Stockholm University, Centre for Gender Studies, submission deadline October 26th, workshop November 30th 2007
University work begins to be committed with teaching, education and research situations pertaining how discrimination, segregation and racism take place within academic milieus. What can scholars do when we face these problems in activities such as teaching, researching, evaluating both student’s works as well as research and job applications from colleges? What do our experiences looks like pertaining these topics? Thinking about such and related situations we wonder what kind of antiracist methodologies can be used in order to improve university work? One could also look at:
Teaching situations
How new PHD students or associate professors are recruited,
What values are implicit in the way that jobs are advertised and described
Promotion strategies at universities
Affirmative action plans (Mångfaldsplaner)
Decisions about assigning new research funds
How to carry out and to communicate antiracist research and teaching
The role of universities in fighting racism in the society
In pursuit of this goal, we invite you to participate by preparing a short paper to be discussed in a workshop at November 30th this year. In the spring 2008 we want to follow up on this workshop by organizing a small conference where we can continue this discussion by inviting one or two prominent international guests. This later phase is an activity that would involve the general public. You are welcome to suggest both scholars and readings on these or other close related topics, funding possibilities, etc as well as to become involved in the organizers committee.
Researchers interested in presenting a paper in this workshop session are encouraged to send an abstract to the organizers no later than 26 October 2007. One of the ambitions is hoping to collect a sufficient number of quality papers to publish in a peer-reviewed journal theme issue in the autumn 2008. The paper can also be written and presented in Swedish.
The workshop will take place at:
