Die Debatte um geschlechtliche Ungleichverteilung gesellschaftlicher Voraussetzungen scheint alltäglich, der ‚kleine Unterschied‘ der Geschlechter common sense. So stellt sich ‚Geschlecht’ als eine der zentralen Begrifflichkeiten dar, mit denen politische, soziale, ökonomische und kulturelle (Miss-)Verhältnisse in Gesellschaft und Moderne aufgezeigt und beschrieben werden können. Doch erweist sich ‚das Reden von Geschlechterordnungen’ in doppelter Hinsicht als problematisch. Einerseits dient die Kategorie dazu, Geschlechterdifferenzierung als stabile, selbstverständliche und natürlich erscheinende ‚Ordnung’ zu beschreiben, die es zu kritisieren und zu verändern gilt. Andererseits wird der Begriff der ‚Geschlechtlichkeit’ selbst in seiner Ausprägung von den Effekten wirkmächtiger Ordnungsprinzipien und -praktiken geprägt.

Das fastforeword-Themenheft ‚Geschlechterordnungen’ versucht, diese doppelte Problematik in den Blick zu nehmen und aufzuarbeiten. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit soll dabei auf Praktiken der Wissenserzeugung und Wissensrepräsentation gelegt werden, die die „Ordnung der Geschlechter“ historisch und gesellschaftlich konkret erzeugen und gleichzeitig voraussetzen. The Journal of Educational Administration and History is pleased to announce a call for papers for a Guest Edited Issue to be published in 2010. The focus is: Gender, History and Educational Administration. The Guest Editor is Dr Stephanie Spencer, University of Winchester, UK.

Contributions are invited on the issues raised by Joan Scott nearly 25 years ago in her much quoted article ‘Gender: A useful category of historical analysis’ (American Historical Review, 91 (5) 1053-1075). The relational nature of gender and its role as a signifier of power may today be further interrogated, enriched by the vast body of research into masculinities and the development of feminist theory since Scott’s article was published. In December 2008 The American Historical Review published five articles and a commentary from Scott returning to the question of gender as a useful category of analysis within current historical research. In this special edition of the Journal of Educational Administration and History we seek to continue this revision into the more focused realm of educational history and administration and draw contributions from a diversity of geographical regions. Geschlecht zwischen Affirmation, Subversion und Verweigerung Widerspenstigkeit gegenüber sozialen und kulturellen Ausformungen von Geschlecht, wie sie im geplanten Sammelband thematisiert werden soll, kann Irritationen und Unbehagen auslösen, indem sie Geschlechtszuschreibungen offen legt. So wird das Spektrum möglicher Geschlechterkategorien unter Umständen erweitert, sei es durch die Intention, die Geschlechterordnung bewusst infragezustellen, sei es als unbewusster Akt. Widerspenstigkeit lässt sich als das beschreiben, „was sich nicht fügt, was sich nicht glätten läßt. Eine dumme Haarsträhne oder eine Falte, die sich unerwünscht aufgeworfen hat und nur mit besonderen Mitteln, mit technischem Aufwand oder mit Desinteresse zu bewältigen ist. Oder aber mit Humor“ (Ute Vorkoeper, 2000).

Widerspenstigkeit manifestiert sich in verschiedenen historischen Situationen und kulturellen Räumen. Das Interesse dieses Bandes liegt in der Analyse desjenigen Moments, in dem „Szenen von Widerspenstigkeit“ in Affirmation, Subversion oder in eine spielerische Verweigerung von Geschlecht umschlagen. Women are at the center of conflicts and wars, both overt and silent. They bear the brunt of violence in different forms, whether in their personal lives or from armed conflicts within their communities or among nations of the world. Yet women have not been mere victims or casualties of war. Women have always struggled and survived over experiences of violence. They continue to work for peace and build secure communities. Women have been mostly invisible, however, in peace negotiations and policy making in many countries.

Scholars from a variety of fields are invited to the Human-Animal Studies group at the Centre for Gender Research, Uppsala University, Sweden. Our current disciplinary backgrounds are in Sociology, Art history, Philosophy, Cultural Geography, Cultural studies, Pedagogy and Evolutionary biology. (See here and our respective homepages)

The position is a five-month (with the possibility of an extension up to a maximum 11 months) residential postdoctoral fellowship to scholars engaged in the question of animals/human-animal relations and gender/intersectionality studies.

We are particularly interested in projects that have a gender/intersectional critical perspective on animals/human-animal relations. Proposals should be interdisciplinary and aim at connecting to animal studies, feminist theory, approaches to sustainability and resilience, sexuality studies, and/or critical race and postcolonial theories.

Eastern Africa is strongly affected by internal displacements and forced migration. The region experienced various forms of migration, flight and refuge, historically as well as contemporary, including permanent, internal and external, documented and un-documented, conflict-induced and labour transitory migration.

Still – and although global interest in migration processes is rising – African migration processes are under-represented in migration research and in the global migration discourse. Migration, despite its critical relevance to Africa’s development, is often hardly recognised in academic contexts. Theorising migration and challenging predominant images of the migrant from African perspectives, by African scholars, is not yet prevalent.
