Women participated in the first universal exhibition in London in 1851, alongside their colleagues. But the nature of their participation changed in 1878 when the French organized the first International congress for the rights of women alongside the Parisian exhibition. Gender politics entered the arena. Women’s visibility within these international events acquired yet another dimension during the World Fair in Chicago in 1893 when American women decided to highlight women’s contribution to the social and moral economy of their respective nations through the construction of a Woman’s Building. As in 1878, the Fair offered an opportunity for women to debate social, economic and political problems within the World’s Congress of Representative Women. Read more (Web with English PDF)
