Seit zwei Jahren regiert in Deutschland eine Bundeskanzlerin. Die erste Überraschung darüber ist verflogen und anders als im Wahljahr selbst wird „Geschlecht“ kaum mehr thematisiert, wenn es um Entscheidungen, Regierungsstil oder Auftreten von Frauen in politischen Spitzenfunktionen geht. Hat sich damit das einst zentrale Thema „Frauen in der (institutionellen) Politik“ der alten Frauenbewegung und der politikwissenschaftlichen Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung erledigt? Ganz sicher nicht. Zum einen ist die politische Sphäre noch immer eine männliche Domäne, und es sind überwiegend Männer, die auf nationaler, europäischer und weltweit transnationaler Ebene die politischen Entscheidungen treffen. Zum anderen erfolgt die geschlechterdifferenzierte Verteilung der politischen Positionen zumeist entlang der Achse von „weichen“
Politikfeldern wie Familien-, Gesundheits- und Bildungspolitik einerseits und „harten“ Politikfeldern wie Außen-, Finanz- oder Sicherheitspolitik andererseits. Continue reading

Emotion, Space and Society provides a forum for interdisciplinary debate on theoretically informed research on the emotional intersections between people and places. The journal aims are conceived to encourage investigations of feelings and affect in various spatial and social contexts, environments and landscapes. Questions of emotion are relevant to a variety of disciplines, and submissions will be sought from across the full spectrum of the humanities and social sciences. Submissions will investigate the multiplicity of spaces and places that produce and are produced by emotional and affective life, representing an inclusive range of theoretical and methodological engagements with emotion as a social, cultural and spatial phenomenon. Darüber hinaus soll ausreichend Zeit für grundsätzliche Diskussionen über methodische bzw. methodologische und theoretische Fragen sowie für eine Bestandsaufnahme von Desideraten eingeräumt werden.

The fall of the Communist regimes and the difficult transition to a free market economy stimulated many people in Central and Eastern Europe to leave their country. Most of them moved to Western Europe and found a job as domestic workers (cleaning woman, building worker, plumber, etc.). In several European cities, big Central European communities arose. Some of them, for instance the ones in London and other British cities, count hundreds of thousand people since the EU enlargement of 2004.
These migration waves have not only influenced economy, but have also stimulated contacts between different European ethnic and national groups. The immigrants themselves face new social structures, values, principles, and behaviour patterns. Since they also keep in touch with their homeland (their movement is often considered as a pendulum migration), they share some of their experiences with their compatriots staying at home. Also Western Europeans have been influenced by this migration. The employment of a Central European worker was often the first direct contact with an individual from the Eastern part of the continent. Continue reading
Since the Club of Rome’s “Limits to Growth” resource problems have been a major focus of research among environmentalists. Conflicts over water and oil, over mineral deposits and timber reserves are familiar issues in environmental history as well as in ongoing political discussions. The debate over “peak oil” is only the most recent in a long series of debates over dwindling reserves. The underlying assumption in many of these debates is that we have a rough estimate of the size of the remaining material. But what if the situation is not so clear? What if the size of the reserve is difficult to quantify? If the uses are diverse and subject to change? If patterns of use change in the future in ways that cannot be predicted? Continue reading

The European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) is an independent, scholarly association that supports and encourages the training, research and cross-national co-operation of political scientists throughout Europe and beyond.
The ECPR Standing Group on Gender and Politics has been in existence since 1985. It has currently over 300 members from different parts of the world that form a broad-based network on issues relating to the study of gender and politics. The group actively encourages workshops and research groups with an emphasis on gender issues and seeks to increase the profile of women in the main fields of political science. Continue reading

Der Sport und die Körperkultur in der Sowjetunion prägten und verwirklichten ein sozialistisches Menschenbild. Im Bereich des Sports kreuzten sich Diskurse über technologischen Wandel, die modernen wissenschaftlichen Leitdisziplinen Physiologie, Biologie, Medizin und Hygiene sowie über die „Mechanisierung“ und Perfektionierung des menschlichen Körpers und seiner Leistungsfähigkeit. Der Sport als Instrument eines staatlich gesteuerten „social engineering“ barg aber auch sozialen Sprengstoff und konnte zum Indikator schleichender gesellschaftlicher Erschöpfungszustände werden.
