Christopher Kilmartin, Ph.D, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, internationally-recognized expert on gender and violence prevention, Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Gender Studies University of Klagenfurt
The stereotypical rapist is a sex-starved, deranged stranger who emerges from the dark and subdues his victim with physical force or threatens the victim with a weapon. But in over 80% of rapes, the attacker is known to the victim, the crime takes place in either the victim’s or the attacker’s residence and no weapon is employed, and often no physical injury sustained. In this presentation, Dr. Kilmartin reports the available research on the actual characteristics and methods of acquaintance rapists and offers strategies for intervention and prevention in police investigation, prosecution, and education.
