CfP: Gender and modernity in Turkey (Event: 01/2014, Washington); DL: 04.02.2013

American Historical Association’s 2014 annual meeting in Washington, DC to be held from January 2-5. (Website)

“We are looking for a third panelist and a chair ar a commentator interested in presenting at the next AHA Annual Conference in Washington, DC in January 2014.

Our panel concerns gender and modernity in Turkey (or possibly the larger Middle East). Of particular interest would be papers concerning post-Ottoman Empire, especially the post-World War II era.

Currently, one paper looks at American YWCA workers and their role in bringing „modernity“ to the emerging Turkish nation in the 1920s and 1930s; the second paper examines post-World War II consumption and advertisements using the veil and/or its concepts.”

Please contact Annessa with questions (annessababic@gmail.com). Proposals for inclusion on the panel are due February 4, 2013.
