‘Mapa del Mundo’, the Spanish-language version of ‘Mapping the World’, the online database of women’s information services and centers, is now online. Launched February 1, 2009.
Mapa del Mundo makes the resources of more than 400 women’s libraries, archives, and information, documentation and resource centers in 132 countries accessible to Spanish speaking audiences. The database is an initiative of the International Information Centre and Archives for the Women’s Movement (IIAV) in Amsterdam.
Mapa del Mundo has been developed in response to requests from women in Latin America. The initiative grew out of the Know How Conference in Mexico in 2006. One of the aims of the conference was to “found a Latin American network of information centers and libraries on women’s and gender studies”. Increasing the availability, accessibility and visibility of women’s information can make a significant difference in the lives of all women – indigenous, rural and urban.
Mapping the World, the English language version of the database which has been online since 1998, is an inventory of women’s libraries, documentation centers and archives worldwide. Women’s information centers can be found in nearly every country in the world, from Sweden to Kenya and from Chile to Bangladesh. Mapping the World provides access to the often unique resources these centers make available. The database can be searched by organization, country, subject and free text, and includes links to the digital and online collections of the cooperating centers. The information in the database is continuously updated and expanded.
Mapa del Mundo and Mapping the World are products of the International Information Centre and Archives for the Women’s Movement (IIAV) in the Netherlands. The IIAV’s mission is to increase the availability of information and knowledge about women and to promote research about women’s history, lives and experiences.
