CF Panelists: Radical Antireligious Programs (Event: AHA, Jan. 2011); DL: 01.04.2010

American Historical Association’s Annual Meeting Miniconference on “Religion, Peace, and Violence” (Web)
Place: Boston, Mass., USA
Time: 6-9 Jan. 2011
Deadline: 1 April 2010
Dear Colleagues, I am organizing a panel for the 2011 American Historical Association’s Annual Meeting Miniconference on “Religion, Peace, and Violence” (in Boston, Mass., USA, 6-9 Jan. 2011, see announcement in Perspectives, Feb 2010, p. 7, Web), with the working title „What Happens When the God(s) Are Taken Away Too Fast: A Historical Examination of Radical Antireligious Programs and Responses to Them.“
This panel will bring together several historical case studies of institutional and individual attempts to challenge and/or eliminate popularly-held religious beliefs, whether in the name of enforcing orthodoxy, effecting conversion, secularizing, or radicalizing society, and the challenges made in response to these campaigns (for example, my research focuses on the responses of Catholic women’s organizations to the Mexican government’s social reform and anticlerical programs in the first decades following the Revolution (1920s-1940s)).
Our goal will be to present and compare the campaigns and their responses, both violent and nonviolent, and to assess the short- and long-term implications of suppression of religious belief and practice, compromise, and resistance to such programs.  I believe this panel would benefit from a wider range of geographic and chronological examinations, so I invite interested readers to send paper proposals and to circulate this call for papers to other interested colleagues (its final composition, of course, will depend on responses received).
In order to organize an effective panel, I ask that interested presenters send their proposals by no later than 1 April 2010 (the AHA’s deadline for reception of panel proposals is 15 April 2010; this will give us time to modify as needed).  Suggestions and self-nominations for commenters are also welcome.  Please respond to Kristina Boylan (Kristina.boylan@sunyit.edu) off-list (I do not subscribe to all the lists on which this notice is posted).
With thanks,
Kristina A. Boylan
