The range of feminist interpretations, self-definitions, and external ascriptions is wide and diverse, depending on a country’s history and culture.

Poland is a confident country with a strong freedom and independence movement, which has been formative for the gender relations. Like in other socialist countries women’s education and their equality through integration into the working world were promoted during the times of the Com-munist regime. Since then equality was to be considered as achieved. However, recently voices can be heard in different areas of Polish society, culture, and politics that wish or request a return to traditional gender relations and the traditional gender division of labour – this despite the second women’s movement which has evolved very much in Poland since the political changes in 1989.
