Suffragist, feminist, and political activist, Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She founded the International Woman Suffrage Alliance in 1902 and the League of Women Voters in 1920. During World War II, Catt supported Allied Forces and worked against Nazi persecution of the Jews.

Six photograph albums suffragists from the Carrie Chapman Catt Papers have been digitized (1.157 Items) and made available online through through Triptych Tri-College Digital Library, a digital initiative of Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore, and Haverford Colleges. The albums are housed with the rest of the Catt Papers in Special Collections at Bryn Mawr College Library. The albums were most likely assembled by Catt’s assistant Alda Wilson. The 815 photographs included in the albums cover the period from c. 1840 through 1940 and document the international suffrage movement. Photographic subjects include parades and other events as well as individuals involved in the American and international suffrage movements.

Women gained the right to vote when the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on August 26, 1920. But the struggle for the ballot began decades earlier. The story of Iowa women mirrors what happened on the national level. The Hawkeye state was often looked to as an example because of its ties to national suffrage leaders, a history of liberalism, and visionary organizing tactics.

In honor of the 90th Anniversary of women’s suffrage, the Iowa Women’s Archives (IWA) received a grant from the State Historical Society, Inc. to digitize documents, photographs, and artifacts highlighting Iowa’s unique heritage.

Materials from the Iowa Women’s Archives (Web), the State Historical Society of Iowa (Web), and the Special Collections Departments of The University of Iowa (Web) and Iowa State University libraries (Web) are now available in the Iowa Digital Library (Web).

In addition, the Iowa Women’s Archives has created this scrapbook exhibit to provide a brief introduction to Iowa’s suffrage history and point to local and state suffrage Resources (Web).

„For this issue, InVisible Culture invites scholarly articles and creative works that address the complex and multiple meanings of love.

According to Freud, „it is always possible to bind together a considerable number of people in love, so long as there are other people left over to receive the manifestations of their aggressiveness.“ Is love beyond us? Whether it connotes a delusion, state, obsession, rupture, failure, family, intimacy, or self, love eludes and mystifies. Mutable, primordial, and accumulable, it persists as a permanent horizon, accessible to everyone. In recent events the demand for love has emerged again and again, echoing the the failed and cyclical nature of past desires. Even as past desires are fulfilled–either by the state, the family, physically, spiritually–the hope for love remains, its forms and conceptions ever changing.

„BodyWorks takes an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach to representations of bodies, embodiment and sensory experience across literature and culture. In doing so, we welcome responses from a range of disciplines, including cultural studies, literary studies, philosophy, arts, history, education, media, social sciences and medical humanities. Through this breadth of intellectual inquiry, the event aims to draw together a range of approaches and methodologies for exploring various facets of the contemporary shift towards studies of the body and emotions in the humanities.

Papers may choose to respond to recent scholarship in affect studies, new materialisms, posthumanism, grotesque theory, feminist theory or queer theory. We invite new perspectives on modes of depicting bodies and emotions, and on representations of physical difference. „Women on Waves“ ist eine von der niederländischen Ärztin Rebecca Gomperts 1999 gegründete Non-Profit-Organisation, die es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, über Verhütung und ungewollte Schwangerschaften zu informieren und sichere Abtreibungsmöglichkeiten zur Verfügung zu stellen. In Kampagnen fährt das „Women on Waves“-Schiff Länder an, in denen Abtreibung illegal ist, und bietet vor Ort medikamentöse Schwangerschaftsabbrüche an.
Die mit zahlreichen Filmpreisen ausgezeichnete Dokumentation „Vessel“ zeigt den Werdegang eines Projektes, das trotz staatlicher, religiöser und militärischer Proteste Frauen Autonomie über ihren Körper ermöglicht. Website Women on Waves (Link).

This symposium will bring together a large number of high-profile activists who were ‘ringleaders’ of the protests as well as artists and filmmakers who broke new ground in the accompanying counterculture. Their round table discussions and presentations will be accompanied by a number of panels, consisting of papers by established and emerging scholars from a wide variety of disciplines, focused on the theme of ‘1968 and its legacies’.

For the symposium, we invite proposals for twenty minute papers on any aspect of the politics of protest or counterculture circa 1968. Papers may address any international context, bearing in mind that the timing of events in the late 1960s varied from place to place. Am 17. Juli 1936 putschten spanische Generäle gegen die demokratisch gewählte Regierung der Zweiten Republik und traten damit den Spanischen Bürgerkrieg los. Drei Monate später wurden die Internationalen Brigaden gegründet, denen sich in den folgenden zwei Jahren an die 35.000 Männer und Frauen aus 53 Ländern anschlossen, darunter auch 1.400 österreichische Freiwillige, die den Faschismus unter „Spaniens Himmel“ bekämpften.

Die Ausstellung führt das Schicksal der österreichischen Freiwilligen vor Augen und zeichnet ihre Lebenswege nach: die Kämpfe im Februar 1934 gegen den Austrofaschismus, ihre Flucht aus der Diktatur des „Ständestaats“ ins Exil und in den Krieg nach Spanien, wo sie in verschiedenen Einheiten zum Einsatz kamen oder für den Sanitätsdienst tätig waren. Nach dem Ende des Bürgerkriegs kam ein Großteil von ihnen in die französischen Lager, später in die NS-Konzentrationslager. Viele waren im Widerstand in Frankreich, am Balkan oder hinter der Front in Österreich aktiv, andere schlossen sich den Armeen der Alliierten an, bis sie schließlich im Mai 1945 in ihre Heimat zurückkehren konnten. „Please join us for a two-day symposium on the history of interracial intimacies in comparative and transnational perspective. This symposium offers a platform for emerging and established scholars to discuss issues of interracial intimacies broadly construed. Doris L. Garraway, Associate Professor of French at Northwestern University, will be the keynote speaker. Symposium organizers seek papers that include, but are not limited to, themes pertaining to one of the following tracks:

  1. Intersectionality and intimacy. This track seeks to interrogate how other categories in addition to race inform discourses, regulation, and experiences of interracial intimacies. How does gender, sexuality, religion, citizenship, and nationality, to cite only a few, shape interracial intimacies across place and time?
  2. Beyond the black and white dichotomy. This track seeks to investigate histories of interracial intimacies that go beyond the black and white dichotomy.

Geschichte und Aktualität von Frauenbewegungen und Feminismus sind zentral für die Demokratisierung der Gesellschaft. Sie sind jedoch bis heute nicht im kollektiven Gedächtnis verankert – weder in Schulbüchern noch in der medialen Öffentlichkeit. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt die Wanderausstellung feminism loaded zentrale Themen wie Gewalt gegen Frauen, Einkommensdiskriminierung, Pflege und Sorgearbeit, die Unterscheidung Sex-Gender oder geschlechtsspezifische Rollenbilder zur Diskussion und vermittelt Denkanstöße. In einfachen Worten, damit es für Jeden und Jede verständlich ist.
