CfP: Queer Shepherds
Proposals by: 31.08.2020
The SQS and the International Association for the Study of Religion and Gender (IARG) (Web) invite submissions for articles and other texts for a special issue „Queer Shepherds“.
The relationships between religions, LGBTIQ* persons and perspectives and queer studies have often been complicated. On the one hand, in media and public opinion, established religions are often perceived as limiting sexual and gender diversity. On the other hand, queer studies? perspective on religion, religious experiences and religious studies has been on the rise. Queer studies of religions enable versatile theoretical and intersectional approaches.
The theme issue is inspired by the Pervot paimenet Queera herdar|Queer Shepherds conference organised by the SQS in collaboration with the IARG in Turku, Finland in autumn 2019 (Web). The theme issue is open for writers regardless if they participated in the event or not.
The editors invite researchers in queer studies, religious studies, and other disciplines interested in the intersections between sexuality, gender and religion to discuss how shepherds and shepherding are visible in different times and societies. The aim of the special issue is to address the question of queer shepherding from multiple perspectives. Shepherding is often connected to churches and religious use of power. Shepherd and shepherding can also be approached from other perspectives of normativization, boundaries and exclusion. How are we being shepherded? What kind of queer shepherding exists? How shepherding or queer shepherds are perceived in religion, films, literature, political discussion or history?
The editors invite for the special issue Queer Shepherds theoretical, methodological and empirical writings concentrating on topical issues from the perspectives of queer research, religion and religious studies. The research questions of the articles can for example be focused on following themes:
- Queer shepherds in the church or in other religious communities
- Scandals related to sex and gender in churches or in other religious communities
- Religion and churches as shepherds and regulators of sexualities
- Queer shepherds, society and legislation
- Queer shepherding in stories, cultural products and art: fiction, films, tv-series, dance, music, theatre, visual art etc.
- Shepherds and shepherding within queer communities.
The whole article manuscripts should be sent by 31th August 2020 via the SQSJ submissions portal (Web).
Texts can be in English, Finnish or Swedish. In addition to articles, we warmly encourage discussions, essays, reviews, commentaries and artistic renderings connected to the theme.
The editors of the theme issue, Riikka Taavetti (riikka.taavetti@helsinki.fi, Eetu Kejonen (eetu.kejonen@abo.fi) and Ulrike Auga (ulrike.auga@hu-berlin.de) answer questions considering the contents of the issue. Copy editor Asta Kihlman (aapars@utu.fi) will help with questions about the submissions portal and other technical assistance. We will inform about acceptance for editorial process (or in peer-review process in the case of reviewed articles) by end of September. The editorial board will read the texts for the issue thoroughly and suggests revisions to all manuscripts.
