“I don’t need to live in Vienna, the Vienna that I need is right inside me…” Jewish Refugees from Austria in Britain: Impact, Influences, and Identities

Following the screening of the film Double Exposure (Web), directed by Dr. Bea Lewkowicz, there will be a panel discussion with some of the interviewees who feature in the film, including Otto Deutsch, Elly Miller, Wolf Suschitzky, and Professor Peter Pulzer. The film explores the lives of 25 Jewish refugees from Austria who emigrated to Britain as young adults and children and captures their reflections on being refugees, on Austria, and on their identities today.
The discussion will be chaired by Dr. Anthony Grenville and will address different themes, such as the reception and experiences of the Austrian refugees in Britain in the 1930s and their impact on British culture.
