Panel: 1841 – Ambiguous constructions of femininity in contexts of armed conflict: continuities and ruptures
This panel will collect various works on political and social positions of women in the context of armed conflict. Focusing on the diverse constructions of femininity within militarized spaces (both regular and irregular), we want to analyze the political motivations and projects of female ex-combatants of various rebel groups (paramilitaries and guerrillas), regular state troops, as well as women in peace activism.
Without falling into problematic dichotomies (such as aggressor-victim, war-peace, public-private, repression-empowerment, masculinity-femininity, continuity-rupture), this panel emphasizes diverse, ambiguous, contingent and contradictory constructions of femininity, social and political locations of women in conflict
contexts.
