The nexus of ‚fundamentalism‘ and ‚gender‘ has been an issue in western media for several years. ‚Islamism‘ and ‚oppression of women‘ are perhaps the alliance that most readily springs to mind, yet, equally, the pre-marital sexual abstinence, homophobia and conservative family values propagated in Christian fundamentalism have become increasingly a focus of public interest in recent years. The conference seeks to explore the issue ‚Fundamentalism and Gender‘ on several levels and to address it critically from inter- and trans-disciplinary perspectives. The focus will be on the historical and current specifics of religious fundamentalisms. Consideration will be given also to those western secular means and methods of self-affirmation that are structured with recourse to discursive knowledge production regarding the issue fundamentalism.
The conference is organized around three different thematic strands:

1. Literalism/ Religion/ Science
2. Nation/ State/ Community
3. Body/ Life/ Biopolitics

The White Spaces Postgraduate Network invites you to attend its inaugural conference, entitled New Territories in Critical Whiteness Studies.
The conference will serve as both an opportunity for PGR students to present research and a chance for members of the network to meet and discuss the future direction of the PGR arm. Over the second day, participants will work to define the White Spaces Postgraduate network by developing goals for the network, hearing presentations on potential resources (such as online forums), establishing research connections, and mapping out future network events.

Das Gesicht Europas und der Welt wurde durch die beiden Weltkriege des 20. Jahrhunderts nachhaltig geprägt. Die Kriegsereignisse ließen Soldaten und Zivilisten verschiedenster Nationen und Kulturen in einem bis dato ungekannten Ausmaß aufeinander treffen. Der briefliche Austausch war in diesen Zeiten das wichtigste Medium privater Verbindungslinien zwischen Angehörigen und Soldaten. Auf der anderen Seite waren die Briefe gleichsam eine tragende Säule gesellschaftlicher Kohärenz.
Heute liefern die privaten Texte der Feldpostbriefe forschungsrelevante Einblicke in die politische, mentale und emotionale Verfassung der aus den Fugen geratenen Kriegsgesellschaft(en). Für die Forschung ist es notwendig, den Erfahrungs- und Erkenntnisaustausch im Hinblick auf diese Quellen zwischen den Nationen und Disziplinen voranzubringen.
