The conference seeks to explore how desire not only sustains current economies, but also carries the potential for inciting new forms of understanding and doing economy. We propose to focus on the notion of desire as a tool to explore economy’s sexual dimension as much as the economic dimension of sexuality.

Drawing on Queer Theory we understand desire as historically structured by heterosexual norms, while simultaneously functioning as a structuring force itself – thus inscribing reproductive heteronormativity to subjectivity and society. Presuming that desire can be envisioned beyond heteronormative restrictions and that this bears on the idea of justice, the question arises whether the pursuit of economic and sexual justice can be made to coincide when economy is queered by desire. Call for Proposals: Gender and Health: Histories

Proposals for papers are invited for an edited collection and symposium on Gender and Health in History in the 19th and 20th centuries. In recent years, regular and accurate reporting on the health status of men and women has enabled us to see the extent to which gender patterns how and why people become ill, and how differently they are judged and judge themselves in those processes.

But how, one might ask, has gender been an historical variable itself, one among several elements at play in the formation of technologies of the body? Can we determine, for example, how gender shaped the experience of health and sickness for individuals in the 19th and 20th centuries? Contributors to the collection will interrogate the gendered meanings of the wider national trends of disease, accident, and death with the aim of producing a collection that provides a richer understanding of gender and health in history and helps us to better appreciate gender as a variable in understanding health today.

We seek papers that address the historically-specific health experiences of women and men and analyse the impact of gender on health throughout the lifecycle. For example Continue reading →

Bubble wrap, sanitizer, helmets, knee pads, H1N1 vaccines, mammograms, protective goggles, preemptive strikes, the Patriot Act, car/fire/health/home/laptop/life/renters’/travel insurance, condoms, sunscreen, car seats, airbags, pensions, life vests, organic food, safe drinking water, safe streets… Our lives are filled with devices, organizations, and agreements to keep our bodies, loved ones, and belongings „safe.“ These practices appease our fears, but what does it mean to be or to feel safe? Is safety synonymous with security, stability or stasis? Is it a condition, or the negation of threat, risk and danger? Can we ever be truly safe? If not, why does it endure as an ideal?

For some, safety is a condition of living, as in „better safe than sorry“; for others, safe signals the refusal of life itself, as in the Nietzschean revision of the Socratic ideal of examined life, „an unexplored life is not worth living.“ What are the aesthetics, metaphysics and metaphorics of the dynamic multivalency of safe? Bewegung, Körperkultur und Sport sind aktuell und historisch elementare Bestandteile moderner Gesellschaften seit dem 20. Jahrhundert. Sportliche Großereignisse wie beispielsweise Olympiaden, Weltmeisterschaften oder Städtemarathons trugen zur Entstehung der modernen Massenkultur bei und werden heute medial als „events“ aufbereitet und weltweit vermarktet. Doch auch in der individuellen Sportpraxis werden die Körper zu Markte getragen, fungiert das Training als Selbsttechnik, der schlanke, sportliche Körper als Schönheitsideal.

Sport gilt als gesund, birgt aber auch hohe Risiken und kann tödlich sein. Möglichst tägliche Bewegung des Körpers soll den typischen Krankheiten sitzender und im Büro tätiger Menschen vorbeugen und wird von der Krankenkasse unterstützt, die Finanzierung von Sportunfällen dagegen regelmäßig infrage gestellt.
