The conference is part of the international EU project “Teaching about Race and Gender Exclusion Timelines.”

The ecofeminist perspective analyses capitalist, patriarchal and racist exploitation of humans and nature as hegemonic domination and appropriation of the re/productivity of life. (Bauhardt 2019b, S. 23) Reaktionäre Kräfte gelten mittlerweile in der Mitte der Gesellschaft als salonfähig. Sie attackieren immer schon und aktuell in unverhohlener Weise zentrale Errungenschaften des Feminismus, die das Resultat jahrzehntelanger beharrlicher Kämpfe sind (bspw. Beschneidung von Selbstbestimmungsrechten von Frauen*, Zurückdrängung von Frauen* in die Sphäre des Privaten, Verbote gendergerechter Sprache in öffentlichen Instituti­onen…). Darüber hinaus stellen sie wissenschaftliche Fakten etwa zur Klimakrise infrage, und sie torpedieren sowohl aktivistische Interventionen, die eine ökologisch-gerechtere Lebens­weise einfordern, als auch deren Akteur*innen.
In diesen Praktiken verknüpfen sich patriarchale Herrschaftsformen, Antifeminismus und kapitalistische Ausbeutungsverhältnisse. Petromaskulinität ist das Konzept, das Cara New Daggett (2023) geprägt hat, um die Verknüpfung von Frauen*feindlichkeit und Klimawandel­leugnung als Waffen „neuer autoritärer Bewegungen“ (ebd., S. 10) zu verstehen. Petromasku­linität bezeugt diese „wechselseitige Konstituierung, wobei neben Klimaangst auch gender anxiety zum Vorschein kommt, und frauenfeindliche Gewalt sich zuweilen als fossile Gewalt entlädt“ (S. 10f.; Hervorh. i.O.).
Diese spezifische Verknüpfung von Misogynie und Wissenschaftsfeindlichkeit (die sich u.a. in der Leugnung des anthropogenen Klimawandels zeigt), scheint uns eine neue, bedeutsame Beobachtung zu sein, die im aktuellen Klimadiskurs bislang keine Rolle spielt(e). Vielmehr dominieren dort technologiebasierte Lösungsansätze, die mit einer naiven Hoffnung auf einfache „technological fixes“ (Alaimo 2012, S. 563) verbunden sind. The research groups Queer and Feminist Studies at the European Univ. Institute and Storie di Sessualità e Genere at the Univ. of Padua invite researchers to a two-day workshop aimed at fostering new reflections on queer and/or intersectional perspectives in historical research. The workshop seeks to critically discuss how tools, categories, and practices are shaped by heteronormative assumptions and the presupposition of fixed identities, and, conversely, how queer and intersectional approaches can help us to interpret the past in a fuller and more complex manner.
In recent decades, queer history and intersectional history have become increasingly established areas within historiography. Developing mainly from gay and lesbian studies (Halperin, 2002), queer history has questioned an identity-based, and genealogical approach that failed to reflect the fragmented, inconsistent and discontinuous nature of how a person perceives themselves within social and cultural networks (Doan, 2013; Amin, 2023). While still closely linked to the history of non-conforming genders and sexualities, the queer approach enables us to understand complex phenomena relating to the construction, performance and attachment of subjectivities to particular models or forms of the self (Gammerl, 2021; Sarıtaş, 2024).
In fact, some studies have shown how the flexibility of the queer approach can reveal dimensions that would otherwise remain invisible even when analysing historical phenomena that are far removed from the traditional field of investigation of queer history. Scholars have also demonstrated how queer lenses can uncover power dynamics within different political regimes, such as colonial settings (Camilleri and Fusari, 2022) or the development of participatory democracy in the second half of the 20th century (Huneke and Chin, 2025). These perspectives reveal how unstable conceptions of gender and sexuality highlight invisible and alternative historical processes. Read more … (PDF)

Zwischen den 1930er und 1960er Jahren wurde die Volkswirtschaftslehre zur „Modellierungswissenschaft“, die ihr Wissen vorwiegend in Form kleinformatiger, mathematischer Modelle verfertigte. Welches Denken mit dieser neuen Forschungspraxis einherging, welches Wissen sie hervorbrachte und welche epistemischen wie steuerungspolitischen Hoffnungen damit verbunden waren, sind die Ausgangsfragen der Monographie Managing Growth in Miniature: Solow’s Model as an Artifact. Im Zentrum steht das sogenannte „neoklassische Wachstumsmodell“, das von einem eher beiläufigen
Nebenprodukt anderer Forschung zu einem epistemischen Standard der Wirtschaftswissenschaften wurde – auf Kosten all jener Wissensformen, die sich der Modellierung entzogen.
Ausgehend von einer wissenschaftshistorischen Untersuchung von Mess- und Modellierungspraktiken nimmt der Vortrag die konkreten Seiten ökonomischer Abstraktionen in den Blick und zeigt, wie das neoklassische Wachstumsmodell verschiedene Visionen einer Welt stabilen Wachstums stützte. Die „heroic assumptions“ (vollständige Märkte, keine knappen Ressourcen, eine friktionsfreie Zukunft) des Modells ließen es mancherorts vom Zukunftsentwurf interventionistischer Ökonomik zum Symbol der Omnipotenz von Märkten werden und zu weit mehr als einem Beitrag zur ökonomischen Theorie. Der Vortrag lädt dazu ein, über die Wirkungen von Modellen und ihrer Ausschlüsse nachzudenken.

Verena Halsmayer ist Universitätsassistentin (Postdoc) für Wissenschaftsgeschichte an der Univ. Wien. Ihre Forschung verbindet Wissenschafts-, Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte; aktuell untersucht sie Ideen und Praktiken demokratischer Planung in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren. Ein weiteres Forschungsinteresse gilt privaten Haushaltsbüchern und den damit verbundenen Schreibverfahren.

Ländliche Gesellschaften sind in den letzten Jahren in den Fokus der medialen Berichterstattung gerückt. In Frankreich, Deutschland und den Niederlanden demonstrierten Landwirte mit Traktorenkolonnen, Straßenblockaden und brennenden Reifen gegen die staatliche Agrarpolitik, sinkende Preise für landwirtschaftliche Produkte, Vernachlässigung der Infrastruktur und Ignoranz gegenüber den Bedürfnissen der Bevölkerung in ländlichen Räumen. Auch wenn ländliche Gesellschaften oftmals als harmonische Gegenentwürfe zum städtischen Leben idealisiert wurden, waren sie im 19. und 20. Jhd. stets durch vielfältige Konflikte und Ungleichheiten geprägt. Ländliche Gesellschaften und die Lebensformen von Menschen auf dem Land, an Gewässern oder in gebirgigen Regionen haben sich überall in Europa im Verlauf der Modernisierungsprozesse in der Agrarwirtschaft und in steter Wechselwirkung mit der urbanen Gesellschaft sowie den politischen Zentren grundlegend gewandelt.
In unterschiedlichen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen ist von der Konstruktion beziehungsweise Dekonstruktion des ländlichen Raums die Rede, von der Diskursmacht des Gegensatzes Stadt–Land und den nachhaltigen Folgen der globalisierten Wirtschaft. Die Dichotomie von Stadt und Land ist sicher evident, aber sie prägt zu stark den Blick auf ländliche Gesellschaften als einem Restbestand der Vormoderne. Ländliche Gesellschaften finden sich in agrarisch geprägten Gemeinden ebenso wie in Fischerdörfern, in spezifischen Anbaugebieten oder auch gewerblich geprägten Ortschaften. Aber wie entwickelten sich Gesellschaften in diesen Räumen vor dem Hintergrund ökonomischer Transformationsprozesse und der kulturellen Hegemonie der Stadt als Lebensmodell in der Moderne? An diesem Punkt möchte die Redaktion des AfS ansetzen und nach konkreten Lebensverhältnissen, sozialem Wandel und politischen Veränderungen in ländlichen Räumen vom frühen 19. Women of all ethnicities and ages played a vital role in the evolution of New Spain’s northern silver mining district. Colonial authorities often decried women’s ability to move from one site to another within the mining district, citing the illicit behaviors of wandering or roaming women. This paper considers how women took advantage of the socio-economic conditions present in the mining district—the chronic need for labor, the money-economy, a tradition of mobility, the challenges of policing in frontier settings, small populations, and imbalanced sexual demographics—to negotiate their sexual practices and trajectories, including those that contravened Spanish gender norms.

Dana Velasco Murillo is Associate Professor of History at the Univ. of California, San Diego. She received her PhD from UCLA in 2009. She is a social and ethnohistorian of early modern Latin America. Her research focuses on recovering the histories of the non-elite groups of colonial Mexico’s northern silver mining district, especially native peoples and women. She is the author of Urban Indians in a Silver City: Zacatecas, Mexico, 1546-1810 (Stanford Univ. Press, 2016), and several edited volumes. Her current book project, The Chichimeca Arc: War, Peace, and Resettlement in America’s First Borderlands, 1546-1616, centers nomadic indigenous peoples in the development of New Spain’s sixteenth-century empire. Chichimeca Arc has received funding from an American Council Learned Societies Frederick Burkhardt Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship and Summer Stipend, a Huntington Library Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship, an Anneliese Maie Humboldt Yale History Network Travel Grant, and an American Philosophical Society Franklin Research Grant.

The relationship between the commercial sex industry and maidservants in fin-de-siècle Europe is a complex one. The usual narrative pressed by contemporary activists as well as historians of the period is that they were hapless victims of copious traffickers or Mädchenhändler. However, a glance at the prostitution records of the vice police reveals that the reality deviated considerably from the narrative of a naïve victim whom Mädchenhändler duped into the trap of prostitution. In this lecture, I argue that under the pretext of rescuing and preventing the Mädchenhandel of girls into forced prostitution, the vice police monitored many able-minded adult women who traveled to new locations with potentially better work opportunities and used people akin to travel agents to mediate the arrangements for the same.
Since maternalism was a key element in the victim narrative, redefining the Habsburg legal concept of childhood formed the core of the anti-Mädchenhandel campaign. Paragraphs §127 and §128 of the Penal Code of 1852 set the age of consent for sexual activities for both sexes as fourteen years. While many European nations had raised the age of consent, the judicial system within the Habsburg Empire maintained the age of consent as fourteen years throughout the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth century.

Dr. Ambika Natarajan (Mumbai) specializes in the history of Habsburg Central Europe. Her research focuses on how working-class women altered the discourse on labor and migration in the Habsburg Empire. She also studies empires and imperial states more broadly especially looking at the linkages between sexuality, biomedical science, and female work in the German-speaking lands.
