„Nur in der Stadt kannst du rein religiös sein“, behauptete der Ethnologe Werner Schiffauer 2011 in einem Gespräch mit dem katholischen Priester Leo Penta (Schiffauer 2011). Schiffauer äußerte damit die Vermutung, dass nur die Stadt genügend sozialen und kulturellen Freiraum zur Gestaltung ganz eigener Vorstellungen des Religiösen wie Spirituellen biete, die lediglich dort mit Gleichgesinnten umgesetzt werden könnten.

„Auf dem Dorf“ sei Religion dagegen immer stärker in soziale Lebenszusammenhänge eingebettet und tendenziell gesellschaftlichen Repressionen unterworfen. Dieser Stoßrichtung einer behaupteten größeren Vielfalt des Religiösen und Spirituellen im urbanen Raum folgten seither thematisch einschlägige Tagungen und Publikationen (z. B. Zarnow/Klostermeier/Sachau 2018). Religiöse und spirituelle Transformationsprozesse im ländlichen, nicht selten als peripher wahrgenommenen Raum gerieten dagegen in den letzten Jahren etwas aus dem Fokus der kulturanthropologischen Forschung.

Die Mehrfachnutzung und Umwidmung sakraler Bauten, unerwartete interreligiöse Zusammenarbeiten und Allianzen, die bewusste Ansiedlung religiöser Gemeinschaften, die historische Bedeutung des „Landjudentums“, die Anwendung alternativ-spiritueller Kulturtechniken, die Präsenz neureligiöser und neuheidnischer Bewegungen sowie hybrider Formen des Religiösen und die generelle Bedeutung religiöser Institutionen als zivilgesellschaftliche Akteur/innen zeigen, inwiefern der ländliche Raum mitnichten lediglich ein Hort von Bewahrung und Beharrung ist.

The international academic workshop is focusing on women’s cinema in the GDR and Poland from the end of the World War II in 1945 to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The organizers invite proposals from researchers and practitioners working in the following fields: history and theory of film, television and other audiovisual media; production studies; film and literary genre theory; gender studies; queer theory; cultural studies; social studies; philosophy; history of Central and Eastern Europe.

The workshop aims to encourage reflection on the position of women in Polish and East German socialist film industries and film cultures. The goal of the workshop is not only to highlight examples of film- and media-related work by women, but also to expand existing methodological approaches as well as to develop new comparative and transnational modes of evaluating Central and Eastern European woman’s film-making in its various sociopolitical, ideological and aesthetic dimensions.

Possible topics should address one of the following issues:

1. Women’s professional strategies and creative practices in popular entertainment cinema: Individual artistic choices of topics, genres, and styles / Narrating women’s issues through conventional narrative structures as well as visions of femininity, family and motherhood, etc. / Models of womanhood, constructions of female identity in relation to dominant cinematic, cultural or ideological patterns, national traditions (e.g. Polish romanticism, Heimat), and propaganda policies in Poland and the GDR. 47th Symposium of  the International Committee for the History of Technology, ICOHTEC (Web)

The topic of the 2020 ICOHTEC’s annual conference ist „A History of Technology for an Age of Crisis“. It is devoted to solutions the history of technology may offer in an age of crisis. In keeping with the conference theme, the Disability//Body//History of Technology a panel will take the concept of “crisis” as a core idea to examine at through the lenses of disability and bodily experience. In STS studies, disability is largely framed within medical intervention and recognized as a „crisis“ that affects the disabled person, their family and friends.

This panel moves away from this construction. The organizers leave the pathologizing notion of disability aside and approach it from the disability studies perspective: as a matter of diversity, not lack thereof, as an avenue for out of the box technological solutions that may act for the benefit of all in critical moments and situations. At the same time, they would like to reconsider the crisis itself for posing a question: whether ‘crisis’ means the same to able-bodied and disabled citizens.

The Habsburg administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lasting nearly four decades (1878-1918), is arguably one of the most studied periods in the history of this region. Much of the work produced by historians on this topic has focused on institution and infrastructure building, as well as on the politicisation and/or nationalisation of Bosnia’s local confessional communities. More recently, scholars have also considered the ways in which relations of power in Bosnia were constituted through cultural products and representations.

Historians have, in particular, analysed the relationships between Bosnians and their rulers (and to some extent within national/confessional groups) by focusing on the use of language, literature and writing practices as well as education. While issues related to gender have been addressed in part by cultural historians, a systematic approach to gender relations in Habsburg Bosnia as a subject of inquiry in its own right remains to be seen.

This workshop seeks to explore the role of gender in state–society relations in Habsburg Bosnia.
