Description: This conference will examine issues for women transport workers and female passengers, from different modal, disciplinary and national perspectives and will discuss comparative themes that will illuminate gendered patterns in women’s lives. By initiating a gendered and emotional dimension to the discussion of travel and work, new ideas and approaches have the capacity to alter the face of both history and contemporary aspects of mobility. The keynote speaker is John Urry (Lancaster). Some money is available to support some of the costs for postgraduate attendance at the conference.

Cost – The price per delegate is £95 per person. We are offering an early bird rate of £75 per person if the booking form and payment is received before 14th May 2007. The price includes refreshments and an evening reception & buffet on day one and refreshments and lunch on day two as well as access to the presentation of all papers and the Keynote Address by John Urry, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Centre for Mobilities Research, University of Lancaster.

Financial Assistance
– Due to the generous support of the Economic History Society we are in a position where we are able to offer bursaries to some postgraduate students to assist them towards attending and participating in the Conference. Instructions of how to apply are attached and please note that the deadline for all bursary applications is 25th May 2007.
