Migration is young. In 2023, the proportion of migrants in the 20-49 age group was significantly higher than that of nationals in the EU as a whole. the group of young migrants is characterized by great diversity. Youth migration is driven by divers motivations ranging from humanitarian needs such as fleeing armed conflict, insecurity and human rights violations up to seeking personal and professional advancement. Educational opportunities such as studies abroad, gaining international work experience but also employment prospects for skilled and unskilled male and female workers also play a significant role in youth migration. Not forgetting love as an important reason for migration in cross-national partnerships. How do the experiences of young migrants differ from those of other age groups? What are the particular challenges and opportunities of young migrants in the past and present?
Migration has also a long history in Europe. Religious wars, the formation of nation states, emigration overseas, world wars, flight, expulsion and the labor migration in the 19th and 20th centuries have led to major migratory movements. In some regions, we are talking about the fourth or fifth generation of migrants. But how do the experiences and challenges differ between the generations? And what are the implications of the generational concept? When does the migration background end?
History from a gender perspective have intensified in recent years, but are still underrepresented overall. This applies to a greater extent to the history of migrant women. What special experiences do female migrants have? What effects do the process of migration, orientation and life in a new country have on women’s roles in the family and at work? What effects do they have on women’s identity? How do the respective legal, economic and social power relations affect the relationship between the sexes? Read more and source … (Web)

When women across Europe and the United States started to question male dominated health care and patriarchal power – both in the family and in the realm of politics – their feminist activism soon developed into a transnational movement. The health books written ‘by women for women’, the practice of self-examination and the concept of women’s health centers stimulated demands for better and women-centered health care also in other parts of the world, namely the socialist countries and the Near and Far East. However, what started as a powerful critique of antifeminist and patriarchal conditions in healthcare in Western democracies soon fueled further antifeminist reasoning and blaming of activist women as either “communist agents” or “reckless man-hating” feminists in these same countries. Whereas we have first accounts of how antifeminist campaigns sought to undermine women’s health feminism and of how activists themselves worked to counter such attacks in Western democracies, we need more information on how women in Eastern Europe and the NFE dealt with patriarchal health care systems and health knowledge on the one hand side and antifeminist attacks on women’s (health) movements on the other. This is where our international conference sets in.

We ask:
– How did women in Western Europe and the US, but also Eastern Europe and the Near and Far East react to patriarchal structures and predominantly male-centered healthcare and health knowledge? Alexandra Pulvermacher (Univ. of Klagenfurt): The Fate of Female Soviet Prisoners of War in Occupied Soviet Union, 1941-44 (Abstract, PDF)

The Wehrmacht’s style of warfare in Western Europe was very different from its conduct in the Soviet Union, where it openly flouted international law. This disregard led to extreme violence, much of it directed at captured Red Army soldiers. During the Second World War, more than 800,000 women served in the Red Army in roles such as medics, interpreters, couriers, secretaries, machinists, logisticians and snipers. Alongside the prevailing enemy stereotype of Judeo-Bolshevism, the German occupiers also promoted the image of the ‘Russian gunwoman’ to characterise female soldiers. This presentation examines the experiences of Soviet female prisoners of war and offers a comparative analysis with those of their male counterparts.

Alexandra Pulvermacher is a researcher at the Univ. of Klagenfurt, working on the project “Life and Death of Soviet Prisoners of War in Occupied Ukraine, 1941-44”. She completed her PhD in March 2023, focusing on a comparative study of Soviet and German repression of the Polish resistance in occupied Poland.

Zum Kriegsende 1945 erleben viele Menschen in Österreich dramatische Momente wie nie zuvor und nie mehr danach in ihrem Leben. Die Front rückt näher und die Kämpfe erreichen Österreich. Für viele, aber nicht für alle, beginnt die erhoffte Befreiung von der NS-Diktatur. Ihre Ängste, Sorgen, Wünsche und Hoffnungen vertrauen viele Menschen ihren Tagebüchern an. Im Frühjahr 1945 wird besonders viel notiert. Diese Aufzeichnungen vermitteln ein unmittelbares, persönlich gefärbtes Bild der Ereignisse rund um das Ende des 2. Weltkriegs.

Eines de Selbstzeugnisse, auf denen die Sendung aufgebaut ist, sind die Tagebücher der Wiener Musikerin und Schriftstellerin Therese Lindenberg (geb. Trestl, 1892-1980), die in der Sammlung Frauennachlässe am Institut für Geschichte der Univ. Wien archiviert sind. Ihr jüdisch eingetragener Ehemann und ihre Tochter wurden vom NS-Regime aus rassistischen Gründen verfolgt. Die Edtion ihrer Tagebücher aus dieser Zeit wurden 2010 von Christa Hämmerle und Li Gerhalter veröffentlicht.

The title of this Mid-Term Conference is inspired by the sociology of deviance and its surprisingly tight relationship with sexuality studies. As we know, sociological approaches to sexuality studies have found it difficult to establish themselves as a specific and autonomous field within the discipline of sociology. Attempts at doing so, paradoxically, fed into the tendency to study sexualities as ‘taboo’ and to focus on phenomena that deviate from (assumedly) ‘normal’ sexual practices. In the early days of sociological analysis, there was a strong focus on the ‘normal’ occurrence of things and the verification of social typicality. It does not seem a coincidence, then, that sociology approached sexuality by including it within the studies on deviant phenomena and conduct, with the main objective of normalising its structures, manifestations, and practices. In the sociology of deviance, the study of sexuality often meant the study of those labelled as deviants – or sinners, in the language of various conservative-religious groups objecting to sexual rights and liberties of those breaking the patriarchal and heteronormative constraints of societies. Over the last decades of sexuality studies, our field has found many ways to break free of these labels and to imbue the studies of sexuality with rebelliousness that has questioned and challenged these norms and constraints – both of the sociological discipline and societies in general. Kriege, Klimawandel, Autokratien, …: Krisen und Krisen-Diskurse werden immer mehr zu einer Signatur unserer Gegenwart. Die Häufung von Krisen löst Unsicherheiten aus – und ebenso eine Suche nach und Behauptung von Sicherheit, nach Vergewisserung, nach Orientierung. Diese Un/Sicherheiten stellen auch uns als Zunft vor Herausforderungen, die Zeitgeschichtsforschung ist Teil dieses Szenarios. Sie wird in der Öffentlichkeit als Expertin und Lieferantin gesicherten Wissens über tatsächliche oder etwaige historische Analogien verstanden. Zugleich gibt es auch ein erhebliches Maß an Verunsicherung in der (Zeit)Geschichtswissenschaft, ausgelöst durch ein ganzes Bündel unterschiedlicher Faktoren, die von der wachsenden Wissenschaftsskepsis im öffentlichen Raum bis zu den Konsequenzen der Künstlichen Intelligenz für Forschung und Lehre reichen.
Der 16. Zeitgeschichtetag in Linz nimmt das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Sicherheit und Unsicherheit in den Forschungsgegenständen und Methoden wie auch im Verhältnis zwischen Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit auf. Er bietet der Zeitgeschichte-Community ein Forum, aktuelle Forschungen zu präsentieren und zukünftige Forschungsthemen aus dem Zeitraum des 20. und 21. Jhds. zu erkunden. Für die Abschlusstagung des Kooperationsprojekts „Der deutsche Brief im 18. Jhd.“ können noch bis zu sechs Beitragsvorschlägen angenommen werden:
Über die kulturhistorische Dimension von Briefen haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten neue, inter- und transdisziplinäre Ansätze herausgebildet, die die zunehmende kulturwissenschaftliche Orientierung der Geisteswissenschaften rezipieren und die Zugänge zur Geschichte des Briefs in der Neuzeit erweitern. Diese Forschungen beschäftigen sich nicht mehr vereinzelt mit der Materialität und Praxis des Briefschreibens, mit dem literarischen, ästhetischen, publizistischen Charakter des Briefs oder mit dessen Wesensbestimmung als Medium und Kommunikationsform: Vielmehr zeichnen sich heutzutage mehrere Versuche ab, das Phänomen ‚Brief‘ in seiner historischen Komplexität und Vielschichtigkeit abzubilden.
Dabei ist insbesondere die ‚Briefkultur’ zu einem begrifflichen Ankerpunkt einer Kulturgeschichte neuzeitlicher (v.a. europäischer) Gesellschaften geworden, welche vermehrt auf schriftliche Kommunikation angewiesen sind. Diese erweist sich als flüchtig und markant zugleich: Briefe kommen an und gehen ab, über Briefe wird in Briefen berichtet, in manchen Fällen bleiben Briefe erhalten. Über solche genauso ungreifbaren wie gegenständlichen Objekte lassen sich vor dem Hintergrund der neueren Briefforschung zahlreiche Fragen stellen, die in ihrer Reichweite das ausgedehnte und ausdehnbare Phänomen der Briefkultur selbst spiegeln. Welche Funktionen können ein Brief und die darin enthaltene Mitteilung erfüllen? Welche sozialen, kommunikativen, persönlichen Implikationen gehen mit einem Briefwechsel einher? Unter welchen materiellen, technischen, sozialen oder gesamtgesellschaftlichen Voraussetzungen sind Korrespondenzen geführt worden? Wie werden private, halböffentliche oder literarische Selbstverwirklichung, Weltdeutung und Kritik in Briefen betrieben? Mining played a vital role in premodern economies. The extraction, transformation, and exchange of precious metals – such as silver, gold, and copper – not only established global economic networks but also reinforced political power. Whether viewed from the perspective of territorial rulers, merchant elites, or miners, mining had the capacity to strengthen fiscal control, drive commercial exchange, and upend local economies. While the significance of mining is indisputable, the processes and mechanisms that made it so central to the political economy of diverse regions remain less explored. This workshop aims to move beyond assessments of the impact of silver and gold on monetary policies to examine the institutions, ideas, and practices associated with the extraction of mineral resources across the pre modern world. We aim to connect scholars whose expertise spans mining regions that have rarely been considered together in the context of early modern political and economic transformations through comparative and thematic approaches. To achieve this, the workshop will bring together specialists of major mining regions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, focusing on the late medieval and early modern periods.
The workshop will also engage local archivists and museum curators who will contribute to a roundtable discussion in the concluding session. We aim to integrate their expertise in managing large collections of mining objects and archives in Central Europe to explore new approaches to writing histories of political economy based on these collections.
