CfP: Sexualization of the Social (Event: 11/2013, Chicago); DL: 15.02.2013

Social Science History Association (Nov 21-24 2013, Chicago) (Website)

CfP from Dominique Grisard: “We are looking for two authors for a panel on the „SEXUALIZATION OF THE SOCIAL“ for the Social Science History Association. The panel focuses on the various ways that, historically and today, different aspects and areas of the social are being sexualized.

We have one sociology paper that examines the sexualization of ‚old‘ age, analyzing sexual life courses in relation to discourses of the aging body in Western societies. A second paper historicizes and complicates the sexualized, commodified figure of the (girl) child in Euro-American discourses.

We are seeking two more panelists, preferably someone who focuses on
– sexualization of the rural (as opposed to urban space)
– sexualization and the veil
– sexualization of new media
– mainstreaming of queer sexualities

Please send a 300 word abstract of your paper and a very brief bio to dominique.grisard@unibas.ch

We are also seeking a discussant for the panel–anyone interested please send a very brief bio to dominique.grisard@unibas.ch

Submission deadline for the conference is Feb 15th, so please be prepared to write up a formal abstract by then.
