NORMA – Nordic Journal for Masculinity Studies (Web), Special issue, Fall 2010, Theme editors: Ann-Dorte Christensen & Sune Qvotrup Jensen, Aalborg University

New possibilities for articulations and new forms of cultural expression have emerged in modern societies and some of these are taken up when men construct political identities. Men throughout the world develop radical political identities as a reaction to social changes, migration and globalization – some based on optimism towards these changes others grounded in pessimism. On the one hand globalization leads to the creation of economies and cultural forms that challenge national boundaries and on the other hand it leads to transnational and local forms of resistance, often in the collective shape of social and political movements, countercultures or institutionalized organizations.

Gender and masculinities play a crucial role in the creation of political identities, as well as in the performative forms of expression practiced by such collective organizations. In other words masculinity can be a site of resistance, but the question is resistance to what and in which form?

The aim of this special issue is to explore masculinities related to resistance and political radicalization. Such political identities can be both right and left wing – or perhaps beyond left and right – and they can be explicitly political or take the form of more latent forms resistance. The focus can be on men in wars, guerilla movements, organized right wing men, left wing radicals, young marginalized immigrant men from the suburbs, etc.

We welcome articles which analyze the relation between masculinity, resistance and political radicalism based on a combination of theoretical development and empirical analysis. One of the main questions will be how power, resistance and conformity is articulated in relation to intersecting social categories such as gender, class, ethnicity and race.

Abstracts should be submitted before 1th of March 2010 to: qvotrup@socsci.aau.dk
