CfP: “The journey as narration”, Deadline: 20.04.08

The journal of contemporary history S-nodi. Pubblici e privati nella storia contemporanea proposes – for its issue no. 3 of Summer 2008 – an interdisciplinary discussion of the experience of the journey. The special issue, based on the article of David Bidussa published in the first number of S-nodi (www.scripataweb.it), will explore different journey narratives in history of the 19th and the 20th century.

Those interested should submit articles analyzing one of the many forms of journeying: religious or political pilgrimage, journey as study trip, as holiday, imaginary and utopian journeys. The journal intends to promote the intersection of different fields of knowledge: therefore, preference will be given in the selection to articles linking different sources and disciplines.

The deadline for the submission of articles is 20 April 2008: – For the articles section, please send a one-page abstract or an article of max 20 pages (40.000 characters); – For the ‘Sources of the self/ sources of the us’ section: please send either an article of max 5 pages (10.000 characters, excluding the related documents, photos, etc), a film review, or a critical selection of photos, pictures, art images.

To take part in the selection, authors should also send a short CV with a list of academic publications (max two pages). The material should be sent in two separate files in PDF format to: snodi.pubbliciprivati#scriptaweb.it. Please write to this address for any further information and always include an email address where you can usually be contacted. The articles chosen for publication will be selected by June 2008. Authors should respect the editing rules which can be downloaded from the journal website. To receive a username and password write an email to: info#scriptaweb.it.

PROJECT: S-nodi. Public and Private in Contemporary History. (S-nodi combines the word «snodi», which means crossroads, and the word «nodi», which means junctions)

This project is the result of collective reflections around the concepts of «private» and «public». We are proposing an international forum for a discussion that intends to bridge the gap between different generations.

This journal is a space which will promote promote and advertise research in progress concerned with the relationship between «public» and «private», and will provide a space for explorations on the nature of these two categories and on the historical sources that document them.

We chose the title „S-nodi. Public and private in contemporary history“ with the aim of focusing on the dichotomies, the transitions, the junctions and crossroads between public and private. We believe that the boundaries between these two spheres are ephemeral and dynamic, and that they produce, in specific historical, geographical and political contexts, different geometries.

The first issue “rotte dell’io/rotte del noi” reflects on the relationship between the «self» and the «us» in moments when individual destinies are violently distorted or changed by sudden and radical transformations of collective history. This issue tries to analyse how individuals respond to these moment of crisis by interacting with their political, social and cultural milieus and networks.

The second issue will explore the theme of fear, and the third the experience of the journey.
