Since the late 15th century, discursive and social practices as well as media representations of power, sovereignty, and gender can be observed in relation to contemporary processes of early state formation, which aim at a specific consolidation and expansion of hierarchical gender orders. Throughout the centuries, strategies to legitimize specific power relations have employed above all historically grown traditions in their argumentation, the powerful impact of which allegedly shows in the longue durée. An analytical focus on continuities, however, threatens to obscure historical ruptures as well as reinterpretations and reframings of earlier media representations. Inconsistencies and conflicts between norms and social practices are also likely to fall from view.

Therefore, the network »Gender, Power Relations, and the State« in cooperation with the Centre for Gender Studies and Feminist Future Studies (UMR) and the Centre for Media and Interactivity (JLU Gießen) will host this conference, to examine the power relations at work in the construction, dissemination, and persistence of such narratives and to analyse their interrelations with social practices, processes of standardization, and media representations. Angesichts des wieder steigenden Interesses am Phänomen “Körperökologie” in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften wird auch die Rolle Deutschlands im frühen 20. Jhd. besonders hervorgehoben. Deutschland galt und gilt weiterhin oftmals als Vorreiter hinsichtlich der Entstehung und Präfiguration von alternativen Körperkulturen, welche weder auf sportlichen Wettbewerb noch auf die Erbringung sportlicher Leistungen ausgerichtet waren.

Die Lebensreform und ihr ausgewiesener Kampf gegen vermeintliche Pathologien der Moderne (Nervosität, Degeneration, Atomisierung, Arrhythmie) bildete als heterogene und apolitisch anmutende Reformbewegung den Rahmen für die Entstehung regelrechter sozialer Laboratorien. Als Beispiel ließe sich der „Monte Verità“, der Berg der Wahrheit (eine im italienischsprachigen Schweizer Kanton Tessin gegründete Kolonie, die sich wiederum vornehmlich aus deutschen Boheme-Intellektuellen, und -Künstlern zusammensetzte), anführen, in der vielfältige Körperpraktiken mit „regenerierender“ Wirkung – wie nackt verrichtete Gartenarbeit, Wassertherapie, Wohnen in Lufthütten oder aber Kollektivtanz im Freien – erprobt wurden. Einige dieser Praktiken sind schon zur Zeit des Deutschen Reichs in den Mainstream „eingeflossen“.

Das heute widersprüchlich anmutende Nebeneinander von bestimmten Phänomenen wie dem allgemeinen Trend zur Dematerialisierung durch IT- und Digitaltechnologie, dem Wiederbeleben von Körper- und Gesundheitskult sowie der Präsenz des Körpers als „Schnitt-Stelle“, als Grenze, der sowohl durch seine Materialität als auch durch das, was dieser entgeht, erfasst wird , werfen zahlreiche Fragen auf (…). Ausgehend vom Forschungsstand wird es im ersten Teil des Vortrags um die Frage gehen, wieso eine neue Familiengeschichte im ‚langen 19. Jahrhundert‘ überhaupt notwendig ist. Im zweiten Teil soll das unter dem oben genannten Titel erschienene Buch kurz allgemein vorgestellt werden (Web): Warum sind Familien fragil und was meint hier bürgerlich? Wieso sind Selbstzeugnisse eine interessante Quelle und welche Probleme ergeben sich in puncto Korpusbildung? In konzeptioneller Perspektive sollen dann zwei Aspekte in den Vordergrund gestellt werden: 1) die Erweiterung der Familie um die Aspekte Haus und Häuslichkeit; 2) die Einbeziehung von Familiengeschichten aus unterbürgerlichen Schichten.

Exemplarisch werden dann auf der Basis von Tagebüchern die Lebenswelten zweier Akteur:innen aus der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jhds. vorgestellt: der aus dem Erzgebirge stammende Druckerlehrling und Geselle Friedrich Anton Püschmann, der auf Arbeitssuche quer durch Deutschland, die Schweiz und Österreich wanderte (Tagebuch 1848-56), sowie die Kutschertochter Barbara ‚Wetti‘ Teuschl aus Krems, die mit ihrem ersten Ehemann im Wien der ‚Gründerkrach‘-Jahre lebte und um ihre Existenz kämpfte (Tagebuch 1870-85; Das Tagebuch aus dem Bestand der Sammlung Frauennachlässe wurde von Nikola Langreiter als Edition aufbereitet: Web). Das abschließende Resümee wird folgende Aspekte diskutieren: Partner:innenwahl zwischen Liebesheirat und Konvenienzehe, Diskrepanzen zwischen dem Kult der Privatfamilie und der realen Praxis offener Häuslichkeit, Beziehungsmuster und Geschlecht im häuslichen Alltag, Haus und Habitat als Akteur.

Women’s movements have been one of the most resilient and influential drivers of democratisation and social justice in Muslim contexts. From the legal reforms they initiated to the social transformations they shaped, they have not only been important political actors, but also evolved into diversified mass movements more visible and vocal than ever in contemporary public debates.

This panel discussion brings together renowned feminist scholars and activists to overview the trajectory of women’s movements and feminist activism in predominantly Muslim countries. As part of AKU-ISMC’s 20th Anniversary Events, the panel aims to celebrate the achievements of the women’s movements for gender equality in Muslim contexts and discuss their legacies. It will analyse the main issues of struggle for women’s rights movements, the past and present of organisational structures, and forms of activism by reflecting especially on the cases of Egypt, Iran, Pakistan and Tunisia. The discussion will provide comparative insights into contemporary challenges women’s activisms face in Muslim contexts as well as avenues for transnational feminist collaborations.

Sevgi Adak is Associate Professor and Head of Research at the Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) in London. More than 30 years ago, Donna Haraway published her iconic essay „Situated Knowledge. The Science Question in Feminism and the Privilege of Partial Perspective“, where she discusses the issue of objectivity in feminism. She understands „objective knowledge“ as bound to a specific historical point in time and space – precisely as „situated knowledge“. The conference „Gendering Epistemologies“ seeks to reflect its current pertinence, considering the differentiation of gender related debates from feminism to queer theories, to trans­ activism and beyond, but also in the face of current social challenges like hate speech and fake news, conspiracy theories and public questioning of established scientific values. Thus, it looks at how gender-shaped (especially scientific) knowledge and truth claims are tied to gender (politics) in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Migration is, most crucially, movement between spaces over the course of time. The May 2022 conference centered on “Spaces and Locations of Migration” (Web), this conference will explore the temporal aspects of migration: What are the specificities of time in this respect, and how can we investigate these using a contemporary and historical perspective?

In the early 2000s migration research expanded to embrace a broad conception of mobility that included short distances, circular movements, and no movement at all. This paradigmatic shift sparked interest in the myriad ways that time and temporality intersect with the experience and regulation of migration, and proposed a wealth of categories and distinctions to begin opening up this line of research (eg. Cwerner, 2001).

That notwithstanding, migration research often contrasts the present with an undifferentiated past seemingly characterized by less mobility, slower communication, and a comparative lack of transnational practices. Social media and air travel, for example, are credited with producing new migrant experiences of time. Communication and transport technologies are just two factors that shape migrants’ experiences. Whether time flies or stands still depends on agency, which follows no linear course of development. This necessarily leads to questioning simplified distinctions between then and now. The conference aims to stimulate discussion between a disciplinarily diverse range of scholars active in the historical and social sciences.

During the post-war period, pornography went from being a criminal underground small-scale business to an internationalized de-regulated market of relatively large actors. This lecture will focus on the case of Sweden, a country which de-criminalized pornography early on (1971), but which also had a reputation of a morally relaxed relation to sexuality. At the center is the relation between the rest of the economy and the pornography business, and how this relation shaped market conditions for retailing, marketing and consumption. This, it is argued, not only says something about the transformation of the pornography market, but also something about how the regular market uses notions of morality at its core functions.

Klara Arnberg is an associate professor of Economic History at Stockholm University. Her research is focusing on gender and sexuality aspects of the construction and working of markets. She has written extensively on pornography and advertising history (Web).

Bei der Gleichstellung und Akzeptanz geschlechtlicher Vielfalt konnten in den letzten Jahren eine Reihe von Erfolgen gefeiert werden. Gleichzeitig stößt jeder Schritt, der Menschen aus dem LGBTIQ*-Spektrum aus der Marginalisierung in die Mitte unserer Gesellschaft rückt, immer noch auch auf Ablehnung, Ressentiments und polemischen Widerstand.

Die Ausstellung zeichnet mit historischen Zeugnissen und künstlerischen Positionen von damals bis in die Gegenwart queere Lebensentwürfe und Netzwerke, Freiräume und Verfolgung nach.
